Policy & Progress: New Government Initiatives Advancing Women's Financial Security, Mobility, Employment, Health, and Sustainability

This week witnessed several policy and government-led initiatives focused on strengthening women's economic participation and social empowerment. The Delhi Government announced the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, wherein the women who are eligible for financial assistance of ₹2,500 per month are provided with financial aid around 17 lakhs in the Delhi state.

The National Commission for Women organised programs for women to explore Defence fields and entrepreneurship through SHTGs in Tripura and the Kerala High Court had asked the Kerala government to think about providing paid menstrual leave to women conductors of KSRTC.

Hyderabad is set to introduce a women-led electric bike taxi service to improve safe urban mobility and create employment opportunities. Chhattisgarh unveiled the DWEEPTI Yojana, India's first women-led solar policy, empowering women as solar entrepreneurs and technicians.

Meanwhile, the Central Government established 213 women-led fisheries cooperative societies in Andhra Pradesh, benefiting over 27,000 women through enhanced financial, institutional, and livelihood support.

Industry Updates: Business Expansion, Community Development and Women’s Leadership

Across industries and institutions, several new initiatives and strategic developments are advancing women’s empowerment, business growth, education, and community development.

In partnership with the Morigaon district administration, Tata Electronics initiated CSR initiatives in the fields of health, education, and livelihood generation for women, such as Project Chameli, which aimed to generate employment for women from the tea-tribe communities in Assam.

To improve leadership, networking and cross-border business cooperation of Chinese enterprises, the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce (CECCM) set up a Women Entrepreneurs Committee in Malaysia. In other hand, fashion retailer Snitch diversified into women's fashion by acquiring Berrylush, allowing the brand to build on its technology, supply chain and retail expertise and fast-track its multi-brand growth initiative.

Daffodil International University along with UAE Embassy organized the Seminar on Women Leadership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and International Academic Collaboration in Bangladesh.

In this regard the Rashtra Sevika Samiti called for the introduction of one single population policy by both the Central and State Governments and suggested that investments be continued on women's education, empowerment and economic development along with other policy initiatives for national development.

Women Entrepreneurship: Incubation, partnerships, and startup growth reshape women-led business ecosystems

Jharkhand has initiated an incubator program for rural women entrepreneurs to support 1.5 lakh women entrepreneurs in the state, which provides them mentoring, funding, branding and market access for three years.

In Jammu & Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and YourStory Founder Shradha Sharma spoke about how to build a robust startup ecosystem in the state by providing mentorship, ease of access to funding and linkages with market for youth and women entrepreneurs.

Meanwhile, South In parallel, Korean Women Entrepreneurs Association (KWEA), the representative organization of female entrepreneurs in South Korea, signed a contract with Hanwha General Insurance for supporting women-led femtech innovations through financial support, insurance solution, education, networking, and global expansion opportunities.

Tamil Nadu also reached the 15,000 mark of startups recognised by the DPIIT, with the number of women-led startups (7,572) surpassing that of male-led startups (7,465) underlining the strength of its innovation ecosystem and the growing footprint of women entrepreneurs in every industry.

Leadership Moves: Spotlighting key executive appointments, strategic leadership transitions, and influential career advancements across sectors

The week witnessed a series of significant leadership appointments across government, media, banks, technology, FMCG and consumer, pointing to a rise in the number of seasoned hands in top seats influencing strategy, governance, innovation and business transformation.

The Delhi government set up the Delhi Commission for Women with Lata Gupta as the chairperson and the Delhi Minorities Commission with Nirmal Jain as the chairperson to enhance its institutional machinery. The commissions will concentrate on the issues of women rights, welfare of the minorities, redress of grievances, and inclusive governance. The government also decided to restructure the Delhi Commission for Safai Karamcharis, with former Mayor Sunita Kangra as its Chairperson, thus further strengthening welfare programmes, workers’ rights and services rendered to the citizens.

At the national level, senior officer of IAS Archana Varma was appointed as the Secretary in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, after heading the National Water Mission, at the national level. Rina Sonowal, the senior Indian Information Service officer, was also promoted as Director General of Doordarshan, where she will be responsible for the strategic and editorial direction of the public broadcaster in its quest to increase its digital footprint.

In the diplomatic era, Umme Marufa, Special Correspondent at News24, was appointed First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata for a one-year contractual term, reinforcing Bangladesh's media and diplomatic communications in India.

The corporate sector also saw several notable leadership transitions. Kavita Kulkarni has been named Chief Technology Officer for India & South Asia of Standard Chartered, where she will be responsible for technology and operations (T&O) strategy in the region. Swiggy has named former Myntra CEO Nandita Sinha as the CEO of its fast commerce app Instamart, making that one the next step in its growth journey where she will lead the business to profitability, excellence in operations and innovation for customers.

Consumer brands were also continuing to build their leadership teams with strategic appointments. PepsiCo India has appointed Tanvi Swami to the role of Marketing Director (Pepsi, 7UP, Mirinda), and Pernod Ricard India has appointed Subhasree De as a Trade Marketing Manager to strengthen the brand offering in the retail landscape, develop the brand distribution network and increase brand premiumization.

In the communications and media space, Kanika Bedi has entered into the communications and media arena by taking the role of Regional Communications Manager for India with Nokia, where she will spearhead its communications and media relations initiatives under the company's AI powered connectivity goals. Lamboria taking a place in the 57kg women's semifinal, ensuring India secured its 10th boxing medal. Also qualified for the semi-finals were Arundhati Choudhary, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal who guaranteed at least the bronze medals.

Karnataka's Dharwad Bench made history as all 10 women judges presided over High Court proceedings, representing gender equality in the legal system. In mountaineering, Assamese girl Rupamoni Gorh became the first woman to have scaled Mount Everest for which she got ₹10 lakh and Bhanita Timungpi was awarded for being part of the all-women expedition to Everest.

In the international sporting arena, the Indian shooter, Esha Singh, has won gold in the 25m pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Hangzhou, while Manu Bhaker has taken the bronze, completing a double podium for the Indian shooter.

Mirabai Chanu has won a Commonwealth gold medal for a record third straight time in the women's 48kg category. Harjinder Kaur improved her bronze to a silver medal with her career best lift.
