PayPal Backs Women's Economic Empowerment Initiatives

By: WE Staff | Thursday, 19 October 2023

PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: PYPL) has made significant investments in two funds that aim to increase women's economic empowerment and financial inclusion. These investments are part of a larger $108 million promise announced by PayPal at the United Nations Generation Equality Forum in 2021 to help women achieve financial inclusion and economic growth.

The maiden investment is made by Sweef Capital's Southeast Asia Women's Economic Empowerment Fund (SWEEF), which is based in Singapore. Sweef Capital is a woman-led fund dedicated to improve the lives of Southeast Asian women. It is concerned with identifying possibilities in undeveloped regions as well as regional challenges. Sweef Capital's investments have a multiplier effect, aiming for sustainable living, great education, decent jobs, good health, and economic progress. Women-led businesses, corporations staffed primarily by women, and organizations that actively promote gender equality and diversity are among their priorities.

The second investment is in the Quona Opportunity Fund, which is part of Quona Capital, a venture business that assists entrepreneurs in establishing groundbreaking fintech enterprises in emerging markets. Their investments aim to break down barriers in order to provide high-quality financial services to underserved individuals and small businesses all around the world.

Gabrielle Rabinovitch, PayPal's Acting Chief Financial Officer, stressed the significance of women's economic empowerment, noting that it benefits not just individuals but also families, communities, and the global economy. These programs represent the first step in PayPal's commitment to promoting women's participation in the global economy and opening up new opportunities.

PayPal also has active ties with organizations such as the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, which encourages women entrepreneurs, and Opportunity International, which gives funds to empower women living in poverty. PayPal's participation in these initiatives demonstrates its commitment to the $108 million pledge it made to empower women and girls in the global financial system.
