The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah held talks with Shradha Sharma, Founder & CEO of YourStory and The Bharat Project to further develop a strategic alliance towards improving entrepreneurship and innovation in Jammu & Kashmir. The meeting was aimed at fostering favorable environment for start-ups that can contribute to growth and open up avenues for the younger generation and women entrepreneurs.
As stated in the press release from Shradha, the aim of the discussion was to ensure that the startup ecosystem becomes resilient and inclusive via mentorship, entrepreneurship training, and better market access. The plan is meant to empower women entrepreneurs in all districts of the UT region and inspire local firms to grow via industry and ecosystem collaboration.
Key Highlights:
- Shradha Sharma and Omar Abdullah discuss strengthening Kashmir's startup ecosystem
- Roadmap focuses on youth, women entrepreneurs, and grassroots innovation
- Partnership aims to boost mentorship, funding access, and market linkages
Shradha discussed a roadmap to improve grassroots entrepreneurship through the introduction of entrepreneurship education initiatives, the promotion of success stories of local entrepreneurs. She also highlighted creating linkages between the startups in J&K and national forums where they could increase their market access, funding opportunities, and strategic partnerships.
The discussions also emphasized Orchardly, a locally born company working towards creating high-end apple brands and adding economic value to the horticulture industry of Kashmir. This startup is considered to be a good case study showing how innovation, marketing, and modern management can make things happen in traditional industries.
The conversations revolved around creating a more robust startup ecosystem fostering entrepreneurship, educate founders, mentor them, and create market access opportunities. These proposed plans would be helpful in equipping ventures with the necessary tools and environment to innovate, grow and compete nationally.
The meeting also highlighted the need to build upon women entrepreneurship as a means of driving economic growth. The leaders deliberated on the ways of recognizing successful female founders, encouraging more women to become entrepreneurs and building a generation of innovators. Moreover, they deliberated on how Kashmir can be presented as an emerging ecosystem of innovation through success stories and a national startup story.
The Government of Jammu & Kashmir has been persistent in developing entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation through the creation of an environment that supports youth entrepreneurship, women’s entrepreneurship, and indigenous entrepreneurship.
As a state with one of the youngest populations in India, J&K is seeing an increasing number of entrepreneurs in areas like technology, agriculture, tourism, handicrafts, food processing, and many other emerging sectors. Both parties recognized the significance of nurturing and emerging communities by way of collaboration among government officials, business leaders, financiers, mentors, and other startup ecosystem players.
As per the statement, the meeting ended with a resolution that strategic alliances would be sought highlighting the achievements of successful entrepreneurs of the region. This would establish Kashmir as an internationally renowned center of innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic development.
