Tamil Nadu has crossed a major milestone in its entrepreneurial journey, becoming home to more than 15,000 startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). With the introduction of 15,037 startups registered by DPIIT, the state's innovation ecosystem is growing at breakneck speed, highlighting its status as one of the best startup hubs in India.
One of the major aspects of the new data is the high level of involvement by women entrepreneurs. Tamil Nadu has 7,572 women-led startups compared to 7,465 men-led startups. The numbers reflect an almost equal split between men and women founders, reflecting the growing participation of women in fueling innovation and business formation statewide.
The achievement is in line with the overall focus of the Centre on women entrepreneurship promotion as a part of Startup India initiative. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported that over 1 lakh startups have been identified by DPIIT and at least one of the director/partners of these startups is a woman in the country.The contribution of women in the startup ecosystem in the country has been growing as more than one lakh startups are recognized by DPIIT with at least one woman director/partner.

The city of Chennai continues to lead the way in Tamil Nadu's startup ecosystem, having 5134 startups recognised, which is more than 1 in 3 of the state's startups. The city continues to be the hub of companies in the tech sector, innovators and startups, incubators, investors and startup support organizations.
Coimbatore is the second most developed region for startups with 2,011 recognized startups, which indicates it has become a hub for manufacturing, engineering, information technology, and the development of deep-tech solutions. Kancheepuram comes in second place with 1,318 startups, the other districts with significant number of startups are Tiruvallur (916), Chengalpattu (815), Madurai (497), Tiruchirappalli (446), Salem (403), Erode (350) and Krishnagiri (239). The distribution of startups by districts suggests entrepreneurship is also spreading from the metros to tier-II and emerging cities.
Regarding sector-wise, Information Technology Services has the highest number of startups, with 2,002. Healthcare and Lifesciences is the second most innovative sector with 1,285 startups, driven by new health technologies, healthcare provision, diagnostics and digital health products.
Growing interest in agritech solutions to enhance productivity, sustainability and supply chain efficiency is reflected in the third largest sector having 928 agriculture startups. Food and Beverages has 846 startups and Education has 795 ventures in digital competency and skill-building.
The other key sectors are Construction (652 startups), Professional and Commercial Services (614), Artificial Intelligence (584), Technology Hardware (543), Renewable Energy (495). This is reflected in Tamil Nadu's diverse sectors, highlighting both its traditional and emerging technology-based startup ecosystems.
Tamil Nadu's startup ecosystem has been growing robust with various initiatives taken by StartupTN, incubation support, seed funding programmes, innovation challenges, and tie-ups of educational institutes and industry. The state government has also launched specific initiatives like the Green Technology Startups, Startups from women and Startups from Rural Impact to provide early-stage capital and mentorship to eager entrepreneurs.
With over 15,000 startups recognised by the DPIIT, the milestone marks Tamil Nadu's continued dedication to innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth. The state has also seen women entrepreneurs outnumbering men in respect of the number of startups in recent years and the growth of emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, healthcare, agritech, and renewable energy etc. continues to make it one of the most vibrant startup hubs in India.
