RSS Women's Wing Urges Nationwide Population Policy

The Rashtra Sevika Samiti, the women's organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), passed a resolution expressing concern over what it described as a growing "population imbalance" in India. In a resolution passed on July 26, they demanded both the Central and State Governments to come up with a population policy for all communities, as it will help in achieving balanced population growth and national development.

The motion was passed at the meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti held in Samalakha under the guidance of the president of the Samiti, V. Shantha Kumari.

The organization noted that population trends cannot be seen only on the basis of statistical figures; rather, it is one of the determinants that affect the future course of action of the country socially, economically, and culturally. It may be said that while accepting that the rate of population growth in India has declined due to several family planning efforts undertaken in the past few decades, the motion claimed that population changes among various religious groups have resulted in imbalance.

According to statistics provided by the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, it was noted that the percentage share of the Hindus dropped from 84.68% to 78.06% from 1951 to 2015, whereas the percentage share of the Muslims rose from 9.84% to 14.09% during the same time period. In the view of the above-mentioned statistics, the organization maintained that there is an urgent need for a revision of the existing population policy of the country due to the changing demographics of the nation.

Given the changes, there is a need to reconsider population policy, the Samiti said, adding that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will eliminate the "problems arising from population imbalance" and propel the country toward a brighter future.

The Rashtra Sevika Samiti has also reaffirmed its support for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code at the national level because it will be an important policy instrument to address the so-called demographic imbalance.

“The growing demographic imbalance in India is not only eroding the country’s identity but is also posing a threat to India’s very existence,” the resolution read.

While legislative measures were emphasized, the resolution has also highlighted the importance of continuous investments in women’s education, women’s empowerment, and economic development as important pillars for progress at the national level. It was also stated that it is important for the society to be aware of demographic trends and their implications. It is further mentioned that the stand of Rashtra Sevika Samiti regarding the issue is similar to that of RSS and the resolutions regarding this topic have been passed by RSS in 2004 and 2015 through Akhil Bharatiya Karyakari Mandal.
