Umme Marufa, the Special Correspondent for News24, has been named as the First Secretary (Press) in the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, under contract terms. Her appointment is indicative of her vast knowledge of journalism and media communication strategy, and will help bring professional expertise in Bangladesh’s diplomatic efforts in India.
The appointment has been made public via a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration recently.
As per the notification sent by the Ministry, Umme will be working as First Secretary (Press) for a contract period of one year beginning from the date she joins the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata.
Key Highlights:
- News24's Umme Marufa is appointed First Secretary (Press) in Kolkata
- Umme begins a one-year contractual diplomatic role at Bangladesh Deputy HC
- Appointment follows the resignation of Press Secretary Tarique Choyon
Umme is currently working as a special correspondent for the television network News24.
This ministry has also specified an important prerequisite for her appointment. As per the notice, signed by Deputy Secretary Mr. Golam Robbani, Umme has been appointed on a contract basis on the condition that she renounces all her previous professional, commercial, and/or employment connections from any government, semi-government, private organization, or institution.
According to the notification, her appointment will be valid for a period of one year from the time she takes up her appointment in the mission. All other terms and conditions pertaining to her appointment shall be spelled out in the contract drawn up by the two sides.
The appointment also highlights how merit and equal opportunities are enabling more women to assume decision-making and key leadership roles.
Umme’s appointment is preceded by the resignation of Md Tarikul Islam Bhuiya (Tarique Choyon), Press Secretary. He resigned from his post as the first secretary (press) in Kolkata on July 22, thus making way for the new leadership in the press wing. He cited personal and professional reasons for his resignation.
In 2024, Tarique took up the position of the First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata. He was appointed to the position by the interim government which had been in power at that time. The duration of his appointment was for a period of one year, but he was extended another year due to his contributions in building a positive image of Bangladesh in India.
Sharing his thoughts on Facebook Tarique said, “I resigned from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata due to personal and professional reasons,”
“I intend to write a book in the future about my professional life, office, colleagues, and friends in Kolkata. Everyone, please pray for me. May Allah help us all,” he said.
He also went on to share that he spent a wonderful one and a half years in Kolkata and tried to fulfill his duties diligently.
