Doordarshan Appoints Rina Sonowal as Director General

Senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Rina Sonowal has been appointed as the Director General of Doordarshan after being promoted to the Selection Grade (Director General level) of the Indian Information Service, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
According to an order issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on July 29, Rina, a 1994-batch IIS officer currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education on deputation, has been elevated to the DG level following the recommendation of the Departmental Promotion Committee and empanelment by the Department of Personnel and Training.
The order states that she has been promoted to Level 15 of the Pay Matrix under the Central Civil Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2016, on a regular basis. The promotion will take effect from the date she assumes charge of the post on or after August 1, 2026.
Rina will serve as Director General, Doordarshan, New Delhi, on the strength of the Press Information Bureau, Chennai, until further orders. The appointment has been made with the approval of the competent authority.
Rina brings a wealth of administrative experience. In the Department of Higher Education, she was responsible for important policy and administrative decisions and was also the Convener of the National Task Force set up by the Department of Higher Education to take care of issues related to educational policy and institutional coordination.
Her appointment comes at a time when Doordarshan is furthering its push into the digital world along with consolidating its position as India's public broadcaster. Over the past few years, the company has expanded its digital efforts and programming for the public interest, regional programming and international efforts via partnerships and websites.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also been promoting modernizing the sector so that it is more efficient at delivering content and engaging with audiences through television and digital channels.
The position of the Director General is one of the highest of the public broadcasting system and has the responsibility of coordinating the editorial, administrative, operational and strategic activities of Doordarshan. The DG also has to be responsible for the coordination of government communication initiatives and ensure that the broadcaster carries out its mandate, which involves broadcasting public service programs nationwide.
The promotion of Rina to the Director General grade puts her amongst the leadership of India's public broadcasting system which has decades of experience in government communication, media administration and policy implementation in one of the most influential public broadcasting institutions in the country.
