Women continue to shape India's progress through their leadership roles, influence policies, business activities and their success in sports.
A weekly snapshot reflects how women are steadily moving to the centre of India’s growth narrative, not just as participants but as active shapers of policy, economy, and social change. Their presence is increasingly visible across governance corridors, corporate boardrooms, startup ecosystems, scientific institutions, and sporting arenas, where influence is now replacing marginal inclusion.
This week WER shows how institutions and governments work together to build systems which will help women access opportunities and achieve leadership positions throughout their entire lives.
WER presents a complete transformation through its coverage of governance talks, safety programs, its support for business development and its educational initiatives and its international sports triumphs. Women are not only entering established spaces but also actively reshaping how those spaces function, grow, and deliver outcomes.
Public Policy: Advancing Women’s Leadership, Safety, and Inclusion
This week, public policy developments across India show a stronger commitment to women empowerment through governance, safety, entrepreneurship, healthcare, and social inclusion. The initiatives and announcements that political and institutional leaders made reflected this significant focus, on helping women participate in more actively in the country’s economic and developmental journey.
A key conversation that emerged around the representation of women in governance, with Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, stating that the participation of women at legislatures and policymaking would increase the India's GDP growth rate by 2–3 percent. The importance of equality and dignity was highlighted by Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, who called for ensuring equal respect and opportunities for both men and women. Her address underscored the role of institutions in strengthening women’s rights and awareness.
Women's safety continued to be a focal point of policies, as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced the creation of a security force called ‘Singappen'. Aiming for better crime prevention and safer public areas for women, the project is being supported by high-tech technologies including drone surveillance.
Economic empowerment was attended through collaboration between IIT Bhubaneswar and Odisha Livelihoods Mission and will help rural women entrepreneurs to build their Self-Help Groups into sustainable MSMEs through the process of Incubation, Mentorship, Financing, and Market Access.
The economic empowerment of rural women also took off in Gujarat with over 5.96 lakh women being identified as “Lakhpati Didis” under the DAY-NRLM program.
In the international arena, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur has presented India's accomplishments in the field of women's empowerment at the UN Commission on the Status of Women.
In healthcare, Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, marked a decade of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan, this program has really expanded maternal care access for millions of women, all over the country.
In the meantime V D Satheesan announced Kerala’s free bus travel initiative for women and transgender persons; it helps with mobility, accessibility, and even economic participation.
Social Impact: Expanding Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs

The theme also highlighted the importance of women entrepreneurs and their businesses with the “We Rise” initiative by DP World and NITI Aayog Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP). Ten remarkable women entrepreneurs were recognized for their businesses that have good growth prospects and export readiness. The program offered mentorship, training and expert guidance to enable women-led businesses to access bigger markets and compete with businesses.
Kurukshetra University Technology Incubation Centre (KUTIC) initiated the KUK ‘Saksham Nari Startup’ Campaign for promotion of startups and entrepreneurship for women. In his keynote address, Prof. Som Nath Sachdeva Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University urged women entrepreneurs to play a significant role in shaping an Atmanirbhar Bharat and expressed his university's commitment to empower them with entrepreneurial attributes.
The Centre for Women's Studies and Research (CWSR), University of Kashmir and Forum for Awareness of National Security (FANS) at University of Kashmir organised a big exhibition with almost 100 women entrepreneurs in Kashmir. This event provided an opportunity for women to showcase their products and discover new clients. According to the remarks made during the exhibition by Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, this institution continues its dedication to enabling women through mentoring, skill acquisition, incubation, and networking.
Top Appointments: Women Taking Charge across Leadership Roles
Women's participation continued to flourish in politics, public service, science and business, especially where they are shaping change and institutions, across sectors.
To ensure greater participation and outreach among the informal sector workers, women's wing of Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Cell (BJMC) has appointed Shanaya Sharma as National General Secretary. The move comes as a sign of the organization's commitment to promote more female representation in leadership positions and to further the agenda of labour welfare, Dr. Arnab Chatterjee said in attendance. Shanaya is a renowned actress, producer and social activist, and has pledged to leverage her new role to make a positive contribution to society, particularly women and workers.
Swathy S. Kumar, Sr. IPS officer, has been selected in public service for Central deputation to the Intelligence Bureau as Joint Deputy Director (JDD). She was the leader of the Odisha Police's Special Task Force and became popular for her efforts in fighting organized crime, cybercrime, narcotics and wildlife crimes.
Additionally, a great feat was accomplished when Dr. Alka Rao became the first female Director of the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in its 42-year history. She is a renowned scientist and ex-advisor with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and has contributed significantly to food safety regulations, global standards and biotechnology research.
In corporate, Manika Juneja became the COO of Dentsu Creative India. She was highly valued for her efforts to strengthen the organization's operations and development and will now assume the helm of strategic initiatives, business performance and client relationships, further reinforcing the rising tide of women in senior corporate position.
These appointments reflect the increasing influence of women at the helm of institutions and industries, in governance, security, science and business.
Brand in Focus: Creating Opportunities through Skills, Sports, and Startups
Brands and organizations continued to invest in initiatives that empower women through skill development, entrepreneurship, and sports.
In collaboration with CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), L'Oréal India inaugurated its biggest Beauty & Wellness Training Lab in Mumbai. With plans to train and employ 20,000 young women in the coming five years, the initiative was inaugurated by Piyush Goyal. In his views on the new lab, Jacques Lebel, the Managing
Director of L'Oréal India, talked about how the company values and cares about the development of the next generation of beauty entrepreneurs.
The KLF Nirmal organization in Karnataka appointed Shreyanka Patil, an Indian cricketer as their official brand ambassador. The company started a new program which motivates rural women from Karnataka to play cricket through Shreyanka's path which inspires upcoming athletes.
The seventh edition of the TiE Women MENA Program 2026 started at TiE Dubai which stands as one of the largest regional initiatives for women-led startup business support. The program provides women business owners with mentorship and guidance and development opportunities which enable them to expand their companies while building their position within the startup community.
Sports Central: Women Athletes Shine across Football and Cricket Platforms
Women’s sports continued to grow strongly with major wins, emerging talent, and global tournaments reflecting rising performance and recognition.
The Indian women's football team achieved a historic victory at the 2026 SAFF Women’s Championship through their 3-1 win against Bangladesh. The team received praise from President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Rekha Gupta who praised their athletic abilities and their ability to work together as a team.
The first Senior Women Football League in Rajasthan ended its competition in Jaipur when Zinc Football Academy won the championship through their undefeated performance. Players such as Dangi Marandi, Manju, Tamanna, Hansa, and Sonam Ghosh were recognized for standout performances, showing the rising depth of women’s football talent at the state level.
On the international stage, preparations are underway for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, set to be held in England and Wales with 12 participating teams. The tournament is expected to bring high-intensity competition and wider visibility to women’s cricket across the world.
Women Achievers: Breaking Barriers in Engineering and Clean Energy
Women achievers across engineering and renewable energy sectors continue to break barriers and set inspiring milestones
Shivangi Sonowal from Tinsukia, Assam made history by becoming the first woman from Assam to earn her Fire Engineering degree at the National Fire Service College (NFSC) which operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs in Nagpur.
Anjali Kamat who leads business operations at GRK Enterprises received the Women-driven Solar Business Excellence Award during the 2026 Goa Energy Excellence Awards which recognized her work in the renewable energy field. The organization awarded her leadership recognition because she successfully promoted solar energy development through her innovative work in the industry.
