Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Union Government, Jagat Prakash Nadda is expected to flag off the nationwide celebrations for commemorating ten years of “10 Years of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)– A Decade of Care”.

In this regard, activities for awareness and outreach to be conducted across States/UTs for promoting nine assured free services under the PMSMA.

PMSMA has proved to be extremely successful in enhancing the quality of maternal health service delivery through early diagnosis and proper treatment of high-risk pregnancies in India. Thanks to this innovative scheme, both maternal and neonatal deaths have been brought down by providing adequate access to antenatal care services.

Over the past decade, the program has benefitted more than 7.5 crore women who were either pregnant or would soon give birth to their children.

Key Highlights:

  • PMSMA completes 10 years, benefiting over 7.5 crore pregnant women nationwide
  • India’s maternal mortality ratio declines from 130 to 87 under focused health initiatives
  • JP Nadda launches nationwide PMSMA celebrations with awareness drives and commemorative releases

The program PMSMA is an essential component of the continuum of care approach of the Government of India’s RMNCH+A strategy, focused on improving ANC services, both quality and coverage-wise. It also includes diagnostics and counselling for ANC, and is aimed at making a difference in crores of households in the country and thereby substantially lowering the MMR in India.

Initiated by honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9, 2016, the PMSMA campaign is now regarded as one of the integral pillars of the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

The programme provides free healthcare facilities, which focus on early identification of complications in pregnancy, their early treatment, and better health services to women carrying a child in their womb. The scheme has brought relief to several pregnant women so far who have been receiving benefits with PMSMA’s implementation in health sector.

One major milestone achieved by the PMSMA is the falling motherhood death rate throughout the country. This signifies the progress in care giving and maintaining the maternal health ecosystem in India.

The focused efforts on maternal health in India have made it possible for there to be notable progress in terms of health status, with the Motherhood Death Rate experiencing a reduction of 43 points to 87 between 2014-16 and 2022-24 from 130 points.

This celebartions comes as a result of government persistent efforts geared towards improving antenatal care, making sure that health facilities are easily accessible and addressing problems associated with pregnancies. The commemoration will also involve organizing national campaigns to encourage expectant mothers to access free maternal health care services. A ₹75 commemorative coin and ₹5 postal stamp will be unveiled.
