Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched a special safety force Singappen’ unit in Chennai highlighting safety for women as an important agenda. Just a month after assuming office, CM has acted upon emphasized the importance of the scheme towards women safety and protection in Tamil Nadu.

Emphasising upon the technological route for security concerns, the scheme will establish a world-first drone security system that is solely aimed at preventing crimes against women. Further, the government plans to increase the capacity of the security force by adding 2,500 members along with equipping them with mobility and law-enforcing devices.

Addressing the launch of the special police unit, Vijay emphasized that the initiative is designed to complement existing law-enforcement frameworks. The force will emphasize preventive policing, rapid-response capabilities, and enhanced field surveillance.

Chief Minister flagged off the formation of the Singappen Special Force at the Rajarathinam Stadium in Chennai. The force, which is expected to supplement the current law-enforcement structures, will have an investment of about Rs 354 crores. The special police force is committed to the prevention of criminal acts perpetrated against women and children.

“The true measure of a government’s success is whether the women and children of the state are able to live with dignity and respect.” Vijay added.

Key Highlights:

  • Tamil Nadu launches Rs 354-crore Singappen Force for women’s safety
  • India’s first drone-based women’s safety patrol system unveiled
  • Government to add 2,500 posts and expand anti-narcotics enforcement

In addition to its law-enforcement function, the program is an important response to the policy problem of women’s security and drugs-related crimes that had become important topics during the last assembly elections. The CM promised to adopt zero tolerance policy towards both problems.

Drawing attention to the inter-relatedness of the issues surrounding public safety, Vijay pointed out that one such issue that often contributes to many problems is the availability of narcotics, emphasizing that the issue needed to be addressed at the root level.

Vijay indirectly referred to the inadequacy of governance in the past by indicating that the issue had been left to fester for some time due to the lack of adequate attention paid to it.

Vijay observed that the issue has become increasingly entrenched because it was not adequately handled in the years before. The new section has responsibility for handling the problems associated with safety, ranging from sexual assault and stalking to problems faced by women in public spaces.

With the focus on women's safety as an important governance issue, Vijay introduced stricter regulations for implementing strict action, including the timely submission of chargesheets and strict punishment to those guilty. However, at the same time, Vijay asked the police to take care of the legal procedures involved and not implicate the common public.

Echoing the administration’s focus on enhancing governance and security within the state, the introduction follows a list of initiatives taken during the initial month in office by the incumbent. After taking into consideration the recommendations of a strategic planning exercise conducted early on with leading policemen and administrators, the government has focused on the protection of women and children and also for expanding the Anti-Narcotics Task Force network.
