For attracting more women and informal-sector workers, Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Cell (BJMC) decided to bring on board Bollywood actress and social activist Shanaya Sharma as National General Secretary of the Women's Wing. This information was shared on Thursday at its state office in West Bengal.

The decision was made public in the presence of BJMC National President Dr. Arnab Chatterjee and senior state functionaries. BJMC, which is BJP's dedicated arm in protecting the interests of unorganised workers, considers the appointment as one element of a bigger plan for not only to have more women in leadership positions but also to have a sharper focus on labour welfare.

Shanaya, who is recognized in the entertainment industry as an actress, a model and a producer, but spending quite some time on social and philanthropic works as well, viewed the role as both an Honour and a Responsibility, she said at the Mumbai premier of her new film 'Chakravyuh'. Bengal, she said, in the context of goddess worship, symbolises the divine power. The strength of women that she found in her surroundings gave her the inspiration. Besides the plight of women, she also sees the need of renovation of the unorganised sector. The new responsibility, Shanaya, said, would be the means to convert her social cause pledges into tangible social works.

Key Highlight:

  • The National General Secretary of the Women’s Wing of BJMC is Shanaya Sharma.
  • This appointment is expected to increase involvement and help unorganised labourers.
  • BJMC is planning to launch various welfare programs under its new leadership.

Several leading BJMC leaders were present at the function. Maya Bag, the state president of the women's wing in West Bengal, was one of them; along with State General Secretary Washim Ahamed, Vice President Manatosh Deb and another senior leader Mrinmoy Dhar. Besides them, party members, social workers and journalists were also present.

Dr. Chatterjee, while felicitating Sharma with the organisation, pointed out that the newly formed team was aimed at representing the entire state/district/sectors including informal workers at the grassroots level as well as professionals. He mentioned that BJMC was planning to take the campaign of 'Shram Samman' celebrating labour to the next level and will now push its case with a fresh zeal.

This appointment very much follows a strategy that political organizations have been using for quite some time. They take famous persons who are already recognizable by the public, add them to the combining with the people's cause, so to creating a new support base and ultimately increase the organization's visibility. For the BJMC, a film celebrity as a face of their women's wing publicly is a move through which the party can strengthen its appeal through worker's welfare and women's participation especially in a politically prominent state of West Bengal. The party declared that it will continue to bring out more advocacy, outreach and welfare schemes for the unorganised workers of the whole state at the same time with a very concentrated effort in drawing women in its programmes. The officials also said that the new leadership team is going to start work on the nodal district-level developmental schemes very soon.
