A week in women’s progress is never defined by a single headline; its’s true essence is realized in a new business taking shape, a leadership seat changing hands, an entrepreneur gaining access to capital, a student learning a new skill, and an athlete rewriting expectations.
The current edition of WER Week wrap brings together these varied developments from across India and the global landscape. From conclaves to incubators, skill-building programs to startup funding, strategic business moves to significant appointments; these stories span a wide range of opportunity and achievement.
This week we spotlight the sports arena where Indian women continue to break barriers, shatter stereotypes and become their own heroes. Unlike the big names, brand new voices and grass roots projects add new dimensions to the discussion.
These week’s featured women-focused news and stories signify a lively snapshot of where women are making their mark today and the many directions in which that journey is unfolding.
Women’s Leadership & Entrepreneurship Initiatives
A growing wave of women-focused initiatives is reshaping the entrepreneurial landscape across India.
The Women Leaders Conclave 2026 was organised in New Delhi, where stakeholders from corporate, political, academic and civil society discussed various issues on
the topic Women Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Inclusive Growth and Development. This conclave was organised by Stree Shakti in association with IIM Jammu as its Knowledge Partner and aimed at Nari Shakti to “Nari Netratva”, to enhance women towards decision making.
Gargi Mahotsav celebrates women entrepreneurs, artists, educators, and social workers in Bihar, combining economic empowerment with the state’s cultural heritage. Organized by Let’s Inspire Bihar’s Gargi chapter, the event showcased women-led businesses, artistic talent, and contributions to Bihar’s development.
Meanwhile, IIMCIP & JSLPS Launch Incubator Program in Jharkhand to support rural women entrepreneurs across 24 districts and 264 blocks. The three-year initiative will provide training, mentoring, and incubation to the top 500 entrepreneurs. Also, Haryana has proposed an Rs 147-crore startup support package featuring enhanced incentives for women-led ventures, including SGST reimbursement, higher rental subsidies, micro-grants, exhibition assistance, procurement opportunities, and technology-transfer support.
Ajay’s Udaan recognized women running Ajay’s Cafe franchises, highlighting entrepreneurship and financial independence while providing business support through training, technology, logistics, and marketing.
In Global, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $5 million financing package with FSMDB to further improve access to SME credit with a minimum of 50% of funding going to women-led businesses in Micronesia.
About 300 women entrepreneurs will be exhibiting at IMC Exhibition, in the segments of fashion, jewellery, wellness, food, beauty, handicrafts and sustainable business. These initiatives come alongside other initiatives like TiE Women Asia Summit 2026, which further underscore the importance of women entrepreneurship.
Across sectors and geographies, these platforms are transforming women's dreams into business, influence, and sustainable economic impact.
Women Empowerment, Awareness & Skill-Building Initiatives
Small initiatives are sparking bigger conversations, as women step forward to influence learning, health, sustainability, and the future of work.
IGNOU and NCW have introduced three Micro-Credential Courses covering POSH, Women’s Leadership, Workplace Behavior, and Gender Sensitization, strengthening practical learning around women’s rights, workplace safety, and gender equality.
Women teachers of the Central University of Haryana organised a Tree Plantation Drive as part of ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign. The project emphasized environmental protection, conservation of biodiversity, women's leadership and a sustainable environment; plants of rare plants were planted throughout the campus.
Meanwhile, five students of St. Aloysius PU College started a campaign to Raise Endometriosis Awareness to create awareness about the symptoms of the condition and prompt medical attention.
As far as technology and entrepreneurship are concerned, Garuda Aerospace joined hands with the Goa IT authorities to train women as drone pilots. The program is targeting 100 women each year and will be aiming to generate a total of 300 certified women drone pilots in three years, which will provide opportunities for the technology to be used for livelihoods, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment.
Opening Pathways to Progress
From local enterprises to AI-driven innovation, women are finding stronger platforms to transform their potential into tangible opportunities.
Women from self-help groups can convert culinary skills into sustainable livelihoods in Udupi through Akka Cafe initiated by the Minister for Civil Supplies Rizwan Arshad. The initiative also includes the ‘Illu’ Foods masala manufacturing unit, supporting women in agriculture and food production.
Extending this momentum into technology, Masters’ Union has introduced free weekend access to its AI labs, infrastructure, and faculty expertise for women students, entrepreneurs, founders, and innovators. Participants can develop prototypes spanning robotics, smart devices, sustainability, consumer products, and startups.
Brands Making Strategic Moves
A sporting icon, Sania Mirza enters into a new space, where she will head investments in longevity, preventive health, sport and athletic performance for Terra-Invest.
With her experience as an athlete, entrepreneur and investor, the six-time Grand Slam champion will help bring investment sourcing, due diligence and portfolio growth. Her expertise is further bolstering the company's growing business portfolio in the health, sports, wellness, and human performance space, which is a focus at Terra-Invest.
Funding Across New Frontiers
Fresh funding is enabling emerging platforms to strengthen technology, expand operations, and address evolving market needs.
In a Pre-Series B round, led by Inflexor Ventures and with participation from existing investors, Butterfly Learnings has raised Rs 65 crore. The funds will be directed towards expanding its center network beyond Maharashtra, improving AI abilities, scaling autism screening and training additional therapists.
In the meantime, Rezolv has raised a Series A round of funding, led by Norwest, alongside Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia and India and 3one4 Capital, which brought the total fund raised to $12.5 million.
All these investments underscore the role of capital in driving technology-based solutions in health and financial services and forging a path for increased access and impact.
Key Leadership Moves Making Headlines
Leadership is taking new directions as prominent names step into roles shaping business, policy, media, technology, sport and diplomacy.
The political landscape has also witnessed significant appointments. BJP has revealed a new national team, which will have 11 women leaders in significant positions of the party, including Smriti Irani as the party's new national general secretary. The reshuffle also involves top officials like Vasundhara Raje Scindia, D Purandeswari and Bharti Pawar.
In the corporate sector, SAP has elevated Shweta Mohanty to Senior Vice President and Global Head of Business Partnering – Corporate Functions. With over 25 years of experience spanning HR, talent strategy and organisational development, she adds extensive leadership experience to SAP’s global human resources function.
Google India has also welcomed back Isha Tiwari as DV360 Lead after her three-year stint at The Trade Desk. Her experience in programmatic advertising, business development, account management and campaign management puts her in a prime position to make a strong impact in Google's advertising business.
Rina Sonowal Kouli has been appointed as the new Director General of Doordarshan, having served in the government for over 30 years.
Former Indian cricketing legend and selection committee chairman Neetu David has been appointed as the Chief Scout of UP Warriorz. She will oversee the franchise’s national scouting efforts and identify emerging talent across women’s cricket.
On the other hand, Sadia Haque, Co-Founder and CEO of ShareTrip, has been appointed the eTrade for Women Advocate for South Asia for 2026-2027 by the Secretary-General of UNCTAD. She is the first Bangladeshi to receive the designation and will be the representative of women digital entrepreneurs at the regional level forums on digital trade and entrepreneurship.
Hun Manet's political ally Kem Monovithya, a daughter of the late opposition leader Kem Sokha, has been nominated as Prime Minister to the role of Special Envoy with minister-equivalent status in Cambodia, a switch from political activism to formal diplomacy.
These transitions mark more than new titles, signaling fresh responsibilities and new directions for organisations and institutions worldwide.
New Milestones: Breaking Barriers, Making History
Across South Asia, women are steadily entering leadership spaces that have long been shaped by male-dominated structures, creating new milestones across public institutions to new organisations.
Indumini Thilakarathna has made history as Sri Lanka’s first woman Surveyor General and the 59th head of the country’s Survey Department. Bringing 37 years of
experience in surveying and public administration, her appointment places a woman at the helm of one of Sri Lanka’s oldest government departments.
Meanwhile, Kerala’s Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) is poised for its own breakthrough, with CPM state committee member Chintha Jerome likely to become its first woman state president. Kalliasseri MLA M. Vijin is likely to get the post of state secretary. But a proposed age ceiling of 38 for the office-bearers in state government has raised questions about the eligibility of top officials.
Sports Spotlight: Breaking Records, Challenging Norms
Indian women's sports remain in the spotlight, not just for their impressive performances, but for their inspiring narratives off the field as well. PV Sindhu, the 2-time Olympic medallist, started her BWF World Championship campaign with a heavyweight win over Ireland's Sophia Noble to reach the second round in New Delhi where she is seeking her sixth World Championships medal.
Adding another dimension to women’s sport, TSW, Capri Sports and Hockey India launched ‘Wear Your Scars’, celebrating athletes’ scars and injuries as symbols of resilience and achievement. The campaign is aligned with the Women's FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, as it aims to break away from traditional perceptions about beauty and encourage a more authentic portrayal of women's athletes.
