Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday declared its list of new national office-bearers, where party president Nitin Nabin re-inducted the former Union minister Smriti Irani into a key organisational position. The latest reshuffle has seen a total of 11 women leaders being given important roles within the party's top leadership.
Smriti has been selected as one of the eight general secretaries of the BJP. Her promotion is important for the organisational setup of the BJP since she lost her seat in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 against the Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi.
The appointments were announced at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi and came into effect instantly, indicating that there would be a major reorganisation within the party.
Key Highlights:
- Smriti Irani returns as BJP national general secretary
- 11 other women leaders take important roles in the new team
- BJP strengthens women’s representation across key organisational roles
Acknowledging the new responsibility, Smriti said that the appointment was “deeply humbling” in an article on X. She thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Nitin for giving her the responsibility to take up this post.
The national team of the BJP comprises several important women leaders who occupy key organisational positions. Vasundhara Raje Scindia (Rajasthan), who was previously the chief minister for two terms, remains one of the national vice presidents of the BJP, thus holding the position of being one of the senior leaders of the party. D Purandeswari (Andhra Pradesh), Rajahmundy MP and daughter of N T Rama Rao, has been made a national vice president, having previously occupied the post of state BJP chief as well as that of a Union minister. Rekha Verma (Uttar Pradesh) continues to hold the position of a national vice president, besides being the co-in-charge of the BJP in Uttarakhand.
Varshaben Doshi (Gujarat) has been promoted to the post of a national vice president, increasing Gujarat’s representation in the core team of the BJP. Bharti Pravin Pawar (Maharashtra), a doctor who had served as Dindori MP and was the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Tribal Affairs, is another national vice president of the BJP.
The reshuffle has appointed several women in leadership roles. Kavita Patidar (Madhya Pradesh), a Rajya Sabha MP since 2022 and a former president of the Indore district panchayat, into the new role of national secretary. Also, Phangnon Konyak (Nagaland) has become a national secretary in the new set-up.
Further, Sangeeta Yadav (Uttar Pradesh), former national secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha and a former Assembly candidate from Chauri-Chaura, is the national secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha. Roop Kumari Choudhary (Chhattisgarh) has been made the national president of BJP Mahila Morcha, making her the head of the organisation as the party extends its reach to grassroots levels. In addition to this, Priti Gandhi (Maharashtra), who manages the social media accounts of the Mahila Morcha and is also a spokesperson of Maharashtra BJP, is the national social media co-convenor.
Apart from the changes mentioned above, the reshuffle also included the appointment of Ram Madhav as a national vice president and Piyush Goyal as national treasurer, among others.
