The face of leadership is evolving and Indian women are leading the way in writing the next chapter.

This week, WER takes you on a journey through the stories of women reaching rooms where decisions are made, going to where responsibility is heavy, and creating spaces where none existed before.

From historic firsts in civil services, defence, aviation, politics, and institutional leadership to significant appointments in the corporate world, women are steadily expanding the boundaries of influence.

This week’s WER Week Wrap spotlight also shines on improving healthcare, safety, financial inclusion, education and entrepreneurship for women in communities. New industrial spaces, market platforms, business financing opportunities, and grassroots programmes are helping more women transform ambition into enterprise and economic independence. Beyond India, the courage of a woman helicopter captain leading high-risk rescue missions in Nepal demonstrates how women’s impact can extend far beyond conventional boundaries.

Women Make History with New Leadership Firsts

History is often written in moments that quietly change what is possible. This week, women across India made such moments, stepping into influential roles in civil services, defence, aviation, business, institutional leadership and politics. The progression from first woman to reach senior role to opening doors in male-dominated fields has seen a steady change in representation and leadership.

Dr. Varnali Deka was the first female IAS officer from Assam to be empanelled as Joint Secretary in the Government of India. She is an IAS officer (2009 batch) of Assam-Meghalaya cadre and is presently Director in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Shakti Sharma has scripted history by becoming the first woman officer from the non-medical stream of the Indian Defense Services to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal or equivalent.

In the armed forces, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin retired after over 41 years of distinguished service, bringing to an end a career marked by several historic achievements. She is the first female to become Armed Forces Medical Services' Commander and also the highest-ranking female Armed Forces officer in the Indian Armed Forces history. She has served in all three services and retired as Director General Armed Forces Medical Services with the PVSM, AVSM and VSM as her awards.

The aviation sector witnessed another notable first as Tanisha Agrawal became the first woman from Odisha’s Bargarh district to earn a Commercial Pilot Licence. She did her aviation training in India and professional pilot training in California and got her CPL from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. She has now joined IndiGo’s pilot training program and is preparing to fly Airbus aircraft.

In automotive retail, Pema YK Loyi, Managing Director of Iconic Automobiles, became the first woman from Northeast India to lead Women in FADA. She will be Chairperson of the women wing in the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations working to promote opportunities for women in the automotive dealership value chain including leadership and entrepreneurship.

Dr Nirmala Yadav is the first woman trustee of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust that governs the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. She is a retired academic, former College Principal and has a wealth of experience in education and administration in the Trust.

In the meantime, V Sathyabama, MLA, Tiruppur North became the first woman to preside over proceedings from the Speaker's chair in the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. She was also appreciated by members of all parties on the Panel of Chairpersons where she chaired the demands for grants session.

All these milestones demonstrate women's steady progress towards breaking traditional boundaries and taking up more space in positions of authority, responsibility and influence in India.

Education, Health & Progress Put Women in Focus

Throughout this week, women are setting new records in entrepreneurship, education, leadership, healthcare and technology.

During PM Narendra Modi's recent Mann Ki Baat address, he spoke about the increasing role of women in India's economic and social development. He said that 35 lakh women are receiving support under PM SVANidhi and are getting an opportunity to grow businesses of street vendors and improve livelihoods. He also mentioned Mission ShaktiSAT, which will link 12,000 girl students across 108 countries via satellite and space sciences.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel while visiting the UPSC said that empowerment of women starts at their homes and they should be encouraged to do so along with education and providing them with equal opportunities. She pointed to the increasing involvement of women in entrepreneurship, administration, education and as leaders, and emphasised the need for more opportunities for rural women.

In Bahrain, Takaful International Company and Al Salam Specialist Hospital launched a month-long Women’s Health Campaign, offering discounted healthcare services to insured and uninsured women. The initiative promotes preventive care, early detection and women’s wellbeing.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Aditi Paudel became Japan’s first literacy ambassador under the World Literacy Foundation’s global youth program. The Tokyo-based student is championing reading and education among young people, particularly women and girls, while planning literacy initiatives across Asia.

Women Rise to Key Corporate Roles

As industries evolve at pace, women leaders are taking on key positions, influencing brands, communications and growth through fresh perspectives.

The week also spotlighted significant leadership movements across India’s fashion, advertising, healthcare, and diversified business sectors. Gatha Dhingra has joined SNITCH as the Brand Strategy Lead from the backgrounds of Myntra, Nykaa Fashion, and The Good Glamm Group. Her selection is the beginning of the fashion brand's entry into women's clothing and the strengthening of its presence in the company's life segment.

In advertising, Priyanka Saini joined BBDO Worldwide as the Associate Vice President in advertising. Her rich experience spans Cheil India, Brand Bazooka and Nutcrackers, and is coupled with a proven expertise in integrated marketing, brand strategy and consumer campaigns in various sectors.

Srushti Rao has been appointed as the Vice President of Global Corporate Communications and Public Relations at healthcare technology company Sagility. She will be responsible for the company's global communications, investor relations, employer branding and thought leadership strategy, driving the brand narrative abroad.

At the same time, Purnima Lamba assumed the role of Chief Brand Officer on 1st September 2026 at Mahindra Group. She has 25 years' experience with Unilever, with extensive expertise in brand building, consumer insights, digital transformation & communications, across the globe.

These shifts reflects a boarder paradigm shift in leadership; one where women are not just filling higher-level roles, but are defining the voice, connection, and growth of brands in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

New Initiatives Expand Opportunities for Women

From safer digital spaces to stronger healthcare and financial independence, women are finding that systems can and do offer them support to make real policy progress. This week, we saw how technology, institutional action and economic access are shaping the future to be safer and more empowered for women in India.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced a digital healthcare system named SAMRIDDHI, which will be a database, filled with the details of all pregnant women and will give each one a unique ID for tracking their health from the time of pregnancy up to post-delivery care.

The Delhi Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (D4C) will be established in Delhi with a dedicated cell for online crimes against women and children and a cell for hoax bomb threat emails. The dedicated unit will be responsible for the tracking of technology-facilitated offences, conducting content takedowns, maintaining digital evidence and liaison with cybercrime agencies and online platforms.

In the meantime, Deputy Chief Minister of the Odisha, Pravati Parida appealed for robust institutions, effective policing and collective action at the Shakti Summit. The summit was organised by the NCW and the Government of Odisha, with the participation of senior officials from 22 states and UTs to share their best practices and enhance the safety and empowerment of women.

Economic independence also remained a key focus.  A Mumbai meeting on SHG-bank linkages and individual business financing explored faster credit access for rural entrepreneurs and women-owned enterprises. With ₹13.67 lakh crore already disbursed to SHGs, the discussions aim to advance Financial Inclusion 2.0.

Adding to this momentum, the Bima Sakhi scheme is opening new career pathways for women while expanding insurance awareness in rural communities.  In Kadapa, 3,500 Bima Sakhis contribute almost 18% of the divisional business of LIC, where financial opportunities can yield a greater community impact.

Building Stronger Pathways for Women Entrepreneurs

New schemes are being launched throughout India to build better bridges for women between ambition and enterprise, leadership and sustainable economic opportunity. The Tamil Nadu government has announced nine separate industrial estates for the women entrepreneurs in eight districts with an investment of Rs 237 crore to generate nearly 5,100 jobs. Karnataka also enhanced entrepreneurial skills at grassroots level by conducting AlgoShack bootcamp in Davanagere, wherein 120 girl students got hands-on experience on Innovation, Business Development, Pitching, and Leadership.

Market access is emerging as another crucial pillar. Under the Project UDAYA, Tata Communications and EDII introduced a platform Udaya Bazaar in Alibaug to enable women entrepreneurs and people with disabilities to sell products that are being manufactured locally. So far, over 1650 women have been trained and over 950 micro-enterprises in Maharashtra have been supported by it.

Meanwhile, recognition is helping spotlight women’s expanding role across emerging sectors. Thirty female veterinarians and entrepreneurs were recognized at the Indian Pet Industry Awards for their work towards animal welfare, veterinary care and pet healthcare.

The trends are part of a wider push towards building eco-systems where women can enter the business world, do business and influence industries.

A Woman Extends Her Impact beyond Borders

Nepal’s first female helicopter captain, Priya Adhikari, has completed nearly 100 rescue missions in less than a week amid devastating floods and landslides. Flying through high-altitude, narrow and volatile terrain, she has rescued stranded survivors from severely affected areas including Timure in Rasuwa. Precision, coordination and wide experience of flying in the Himalayas are key to Priya's work with helicopters in difficult conditions. It was one of the most challenging rescue missions she has ever encountered.

Conclusion

The stories for this week sum up to something bigger than just the individual feat, whether in the realm of making history in institutions, or making opportunities on the ground. They represent women in every role—staging choices, creating businesses, fostering communities, pursuing new careers, or running for their lives. The significance lies not in how different these journeys are, but in how naturally women are now appearing wherever courage, capability, and responsibility are needed.
