Kanpur Police Launch 'Operation Alert' for Women's Safety
By: Women Entrepreneurs Review Team | Friday, 4 September 2026
Women’s safety and secure mobility have become a sharper policing priority in Kanpur, with authorities stepping up preventive measures across the city’s public transport network. Kanpur Police launched ‘Operation Alert’ under the Safe City framework following a sexual assault incident involving a minor in a sleeper bus, prompting increased scrutiny of transport staff, vehicles and passenger safety arrangements.
The initiative places particular emphasis on making everyday travel safer for women, girls, students and working professionals who depend on buses, autos, e-rickshaws and other forms of public transportation. Under the drive, police teams are conducting checks on sleeper and long-distance buses while also examining vehicles operating within the city.
A key component of Operation Alert is the mandatory verification of drivers and conductors. According to reports, transport operators have been asked to provide detailed information about their employees through a 20-point character verification proforma. The completed forms, along with the relevant police verification report, must be submitted to the concerned police station within seven days. Verified drivers are also required to carry the approved verification document while on duty.
The verification process is intended to establish the identity of transport personnel and check whether they have any previous criminal cases or other adverse records. Authorities have indicated that if criminal antecedents emerge during verification, action will be taken according to law. Transport operators have also been instructed to complete police verification before appointing drivers and conductors.
Key Highlights
- Kanpur mandates police verification for public transport drivers
- 20-point verification forms must reach police within seven days
- Women police teams conduct random inspections across city buses
The operation extends beyond personnel verification. Police teams are inspecting sleeper and long-distance buses, checking passenger safety arrangements and looking for features that could obstruct visibility inside vehicles. Particular attention is being given to unauthorised curtains and black films that can conceal activities from people outside the vehicle. Police have directed operators to remove such obstructions where they violate safety or regulatory requirements.
The campaign is also being implemented through coordination with transport-sector representatives. Meetings have reportedly been held with members of bus operator, cab operator and local bus operator unions, with police urging them to strengthen safety practices and comply with verification requirements. Intelligence personnel are also expected to support the verification process.
ADCP Crime Passenger Safety has stressed that passenger safety remains a priority and that negligence in security arrangements will not be tolerated. Her role places her at the centre of the city's crime-prevention and passenger-safety response, particularly as police increase field-level checks under the campaign.
The broader policing response is being implemented under the direction of Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghuveer Lal, while Joint Police Commissioner Vipin Tada has also outlined the verification and inspection measures being undertaken for sleeper and long-distance buses.
By combining driver background verification, random inspections, greater visibility inside buses and coordination with transport operators, Operation Alert represents a preventive approach to women’s safety in public spaces. For women and students, reliable and secure public transport is not simply a convenience; it is closely linked to their ability to access education, employment and opportunities independently. Kanpur’s latest initiative therefore places safe mobility and gender-responsive public safety at the centre of its transport enforcement efforts.
