By: WE staff | Friday, 1 May 2026
A weekly snapshot of women steadily reshaping the centre of India’s growth story—moving beyond participation to influence, leadership, and impact across policy corridors, boardrooms, startups, and sporting arenas.
Across the spectrum, women's participation is no longer marginal but increasingly a part of decision making spaces, visible through policy decisions, leadership transitions and new economic opportunities at scale.
This week’s developments ranged from government inclusion initiatives and legislative debates to boardroom appointments and grassroots livelihood empowerment initiatives reflected a growing sphere of influence.
In policy, discussions on women's reservation in connection with delimitation and innovative financial inclusion mechanisms for self-help groups highlighted how policy settings are increasingly being brought into line with long-term participation objectives, rather than short-term fixes.
On the business and leadership front, major appointments in finance, aviation, technology and human resources reflected increasing dependence on women leaders to ensure stability and growth, transformation, and internationalisation.
In terms of entrepreneurship and skills, industry advancement continued to enhance women's participation in rural and semi-urban areas, with training, credit linkage, and market integration being the focus of several on-going schemes.
Similar vibes were supported by sporting success and international representation, with women athletes and teams showcasing excellence and setting the stage for a competitive legacy on the world stage.
In this week WER captures these developments, which point to how changing policy agendas, increased leadership opportunities and economic participation are together shaping the scale of women's impact across India's development sector.
Public Policy: Women-Centric Governance, Quotas & Financial Inclusion Push
Narendra Modi intensified his campaign ahead of West Bengal’s Phase II elections, highlighting women-centric welfare measures and Promises 33% Job Quota in government roles. He pledged cash assistance, such as ₹36,000 a year for women, interest-free loan schemes and enhanced health and education schemes. He further lambasted the Trinamool Congress government for corruption, law and order and poor governance. Amit Shah also urged the prevention of electoral fraud.
In a related policy development, the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution in favour of Women Quota Post-Delimitation, endorsing 33% quota for women in Parliament and state legislatures. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav supported the move, citing the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, with the Indian National Congress walking out, calling for immediate action. Opposition members also questioned why not 50% of the quota.
Complementing these legislative and political measures, introduced Zero-charge Accounts for Women SHGs to boost financial inclusion in rural India. This zero-charge bank accounts with zero balance offer access to banking through digital platforms and home visits to facilitate savings, transactions and credit for women-led Self Help Groups. It signifies a policy shift towards improving women's economic engagement and empowerment in governance, employment and banking.
There is considerable competition among the four nominees for the United Nations Secretary-General post, with discussions centred on leadership, reform, and global crisis management. The race has gained added attention amid growing calls for a women chief election at the UN, with female candidates Michelle Bachelet and Rebeca Grynspan emerging as strong contenders, potentially reshaping geopolitical veto dynamics. However, male candidates Rafael Grossi and Macky Sall remain formidable, reflecting a tightly contested and politically complex selection process.
