  • UN race narrows as gender push meets geopolitical realities
  • Women contenders face veto risks in tight UN contest
  • Four-way race underscores power politics and reform stakes

Top leadership at United Nations intensifies as four leaders undergo rigorous public scrutiny through two days live questioning facing the world. Successors to Antonio Guterre will be judged on their performance in governance, crisis management, and reforming agendas. Although there is increased support for a woman to take the post, geopolitics still plays an important role.

Female candidates, Rebeca Grynspan and Michelle Bachelet, are in the limelight as discussions regarding the appointment of the possible first woman head of the United Nations emerges and gains momentum.  While Michelle’s credentials are strong, given her vast background as head of state as well as within the United Nations, she is still experiencing political opposition.

Currently serving the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development,Rebeca is actively involved in advocating for inclusive growth and gender equity. Her bid for the position is less controversial, still faces geopolitical hurdles similar to Michelle, shaped by veto dynamics within the United Nations Security Council. She holds strong track in economic governance and development and brings a distinct edge to the race.

Calling the governing of the role as both complex and critical, Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly shares her views openly. She described it as “one of the toughest jobs globally,” noting that the next secretary-general will have an influential impact on both institutional direction and the rules-based international order as the custodian of the UN Charter.

Male contenders, Rafael Grossi and Macky Sall are gaining equal momentum for the role. Rafael is backed by active nuclear diplomacy but faces criticism over Iran. Macky, offers Global South perspective but faces governance concerns. With only four contenders, the process somehow signals rising fragmentation and questions around United Nation’s role.
