  • Adani Foundation to empower 1,500 women in MP
  • Skill training with 600 sewing machines at Adani Vikas Kendra
  • Focus on sustainable income & financial independence

The Adani Foundation officially began a significant project to empower women economically in Madhya Pradesh by launching a major Livelihood Initiative under its Swabhimaan programme, which was inspired by Dr Priti Adani's vision for her role as the Foundation's Chairperson.

This initiative targets 1,500 women who live in and around Badarwas, Shivpuri district, who will use their new skills to build a sustainable income and become financially independent through skill-based work.

The Adani Vikas Kendra, which provides women with training and production facilities that total 48,000 sq. ft., also contains 600 state-of-the-art sewing machines.

The AVK will help women move away from irregular employment and towards permanent employment opportunities that provide reliable and sustainable market-based income.

The AVK is part of the larger Swabhimaan programme, which seeks to connect one million women across India to provide them with sustainable income-generating opportunities.

With the Swabhimaan programme, women will learn skills and have direct access to marketplace activity, which will result in consistent earnings, as opposed to sporadic earning opportunities.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia opened the facility and is the MP for Guna. Scindia spoke to over 5,000 women from within the surrounding villages and told them that this initiative can change their lives because it is a venue for local talent to access the national and worldwide marketplace.

“This centre reflects the power of aspiration taking shape,” he said, noting that the confidence and determination among women participants signal a shift toward self-reliance and economic participation.

Dr Abhishek Lakhtakia, CEO of the Foundation, stated that the belief that financial independence brings empowerment is the foundation of the initiative.

Dr Lakhtakia went on to state that this initiative will create a direct link between women and opportunities for real work so that they can convert their skills into a sustained income through their connection to supply chains in these local businesses.

In addition to providing direct links to real work and income, the project aims to have a broader socio-economic impact on the region by increasing household incomes, reducing dependence on seasonal and/or informal labour and decreasing out-migration. The initiative intends to enhance the role of women in local economies providing women with increased levels of agency in their families and communities.

The initiative will also be highlighted as the Adani Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary on August 11, 2023, three decades of working towards inclusive development throughout India.
