India’s women’s kabaddi squad has become the first team to earn six golds consecutively through the sixth edition of the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China. Indians subsequently earned their first Gold Medal in the present edition of the Asian Beach Games. India defeated Sri Lanka 47–31 in a finale played Monday morning. After an easy 30 min contest, the Indian women’s kabaddi squad secured its sixth straight Gold after initially trailing early but eventually dominated during the contest’s last minutes.
India earned its second medal of the day by defeating Sri Lanka. The previous medal occurred when their men’s squad lost to their Islamic Republic of Iran men's team at this edition. Additionally, the aforementioned second medal earned India its first medal in this edition. The Indian women also added to their medal count by defeating Bangladesh in the semifinals by a final score of 50–31.
“History made in Sanya, China! The Indian Women’s Kabaddi team secures GOLD at the 6th Asian Beach Games, China, defeating Sri Lanka 47-31. This marks India’s first medal of the games! The hard work put in at the SAI RC Gandhinagar national coaching camp has truly paid off,” SAI Gandhinagar shared in X.
So far the men's side fell short in this past year with a 44 to 31 defeat against the Islamic Republic of Iran during the final round. The six-man group consisting of Brijendra Singh Choudhary, Jitendra Yadav, Yatharth Deshwal, Neeraj, Jai Bhagwan and Bhanu Pratap Tomar was down 23 – 11 at the end of the first period and was unable to rebound from that after Halftime.
They had previously fallen short against Pakistan during the last edition of the tournament but were able to take their revenge by defeating them 50-27 in the Semifinals.
The Asian Beach Games, organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), constitute a multi-sport beach and coastal discipline event that showcases many disciplines that are not included in the Asian Games. Bali was the host city of the first-ever edition of the games in 2008.
The last of the Asian Beach Games were held in 2016 in Da Nang, Vietnam and originally planned for 2020, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic there was an extended period of time before returning to the event where it would have been prior to the Covid-19 virus.
Sanya is hosting the 2026 Games and India has a delegation of 31 athletes. In 2016, India won 24 medals: two gold medals, four silver medals, and 18 bronze medals. The Women's Kabaddi team won a gold medal and the men's Kabaddi team won a silver medal. India's other gold medal was in Varna when Shweta More won the 52 kg Women's event.
