- Amazon Future Engineer adds 1,000 new scholarships across the U.S. and India for female students
- India scholars receive 2 lakh support + mentorship, training, and internships
- The first batch saw 89% placements, showing strong programme impact
Amazon Future Engineer programme has announced that the program will award an additional 500 scholarships to female students from low-income families who want to study Computer Science at universities across the United States during the 2026 academic year. The new scholarships are the result of the success of the program's first class of graduates, who are now employed in their fields.
Amazon also expanded its Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship programme in India to include 500 new scholarships that will bring the total number of active scholarship recipients to 2,000 by 2026.
These scholarships will support female students from low-income homes studying engineering degrees, and provide both financial assistance and practical tools to enhance career development, such as mentorship, training workshops, and paid internships.
Each scholarship provides up to 2,00,000 over four years. To qualify for this scholarship, students must be pursuing their B.E. or B.Tech degree in computer science or a subject related to it.
In addition, scholarship recipients receive a free laptop, access to Amazon-sponsored technical bootcamp, Amazon sponsored webinars through the Women of the World (WOW) on-line community, mentorship with Amazon engineers, and may also apply for a summer paid internship with Amazon after their second year of studies.
Launched in 2022, the programme has expanded to offer 200 scholarships in its inaugural year and continues to expand, reaching an annual total of 500 scholarships by 2023. Candidates are evaluated based on three key factors: academic achievement, financial insufficiency, and potential for leadership development.
The inaugural class that completed the full programme had graduated in 2025, with a placement rate of 89%, a high number of whom were placed with Fortune 500 companies; including Amazon.
Approximately 400 scholars have completed internships with Amazon in a technical capacity, and there are additional cohorts who will be eligible to complete their internships over the next few months. The first cohort of graduates include Sreya Mula of Telangana, Keerthi Sankara of Andhra Pradesh, and Anjali Ashtake of Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The majority of the scholars entering the programme are from first-generation college graduate home locations, which have a history of limited accessibility to technology jobs. The scholarship is partnered with the Foundation for Excellence, while the technical training is delivered by Nav Gurukul to ensure students will develop skills relevant to the industry in preparation for their internships.
Amazon has stated that since 2022, it has committed almost INR 50 crores to support the AFE programme. The wide-ranging AFE initiative provides far more than just engineering scholarships; there have been 4.8 million students served in over 50,000 government schools across India with computer science and AI education since AFE's inception in 2021, including children who likely would not have received this type of education otherwise.
The announcement of an expansion into 2026 took place at the first Together India Summit hosted by Amazon, which is an Amazon employee-led initiative that focuses on supporting employees through skills development, community engagement and building workplace culture.
