Participation of women in India’s socio-economic development is gradually increasing. However, while their role continues to grow across leadership positions, entrepreneurship, policymaking, and workforce ecosystems, their journey towards equality in terms of access, influence, and empowerment is continually unfolding.

In this edition of the WER Weekly Wrap, dissects a week in which not only did women shatter the glass ceiling but remodelled the entire concept of leadership. In various domains such as governance, entrepreneurship, sport, health, and institutional leadership, this week’s happenings have highlighted the centrality of women in socio-economic development.

Governments, businesses, startups, and grassroot ecosystems are fortifying themselves using welfare schemes, entrepreneurship funding, appointments of leaders, building athletic infrastructure, and sustainability projects. On another note, success stories in the fields of law, politics, and sport keep pushing the boundaries of women's impact on India and the rest of the world.

It all comes down to one simple truth, that women are not only involved in the process of growth, but are actually leading and determining its course for the future.

Public Policy & Governance: Expanding Representation and Institutional Influence

The governance structure of India had a very notable week, which clearly depicted the growing importance of women in the governance sector of the country.

An important milestone was made in terms of enhancing the representation of women within the legal system when the Collegium of the Supreme Court recommended four High Court Chief Justices and woman advocates for the position of judges of the Supreme Court. This depicts the ongoing efforts by the country to include women in its governance structures through its constitution.

Within the realm of democracy, female voters made notable gains during the Panchayat elections in Himachal Pradesh, thus depicting their growing interest in participating within the governance system of India.

As yet another step towards enhancing the role of women in governance, the Election Commission of India has nominated Neelam Meena as the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. This development can be viewed as yet another significant move made by women in the realm of administrative leadership.

Welfare measures for women have continued to be a dominant theme in politics during the week. Specifically, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has unveiled its plan to provide welfare benefits for women that will involve disbursing Rs. 3,000 every month to women, provided that it is voted into power in West Bengal.

A significant change was also witnessed in the domain of health-care governance since women directors have been appointed to three leading hospitals in Delhi. It can be said that there is a marked increase in the participation of women in the decision-making processes of institutions and organizations that have a direct impact on the well-being of the population.

These changes clearly signify that there is a shift from having a voice in the decision-making process of organizations and institutions to making policy decisions for institutions and public organizations.

Entrepreneurship & Startup Ecosystems: Building Women-Led Economic Momentum

The entrepreneurial environment in India saw increased activity in promoting women’s businesses, startups, and entrepreneurship ecosystems.

Amazon India launched a program for women entrepreneurs under the banner ‘Prayatna,’ which is focused on facilitating women’s businesses by using digital tools, skills, and accessing the marketplace through technology. This clearly shows the rise in significance of digital entrepreneurship and how women can leverage the power of e-commerce to overcome conventional constraints faced in the business world.

Across the globe, TiE Melbourne introduced a ‘Women Entrepreneurs Growth Program,’ which focuses on mentorship, networks, and growth opportunities specifically for women entrepreneurs.

Investment activities too continued to thrive among startup organizations. Yes Madam, a beauty salon services company, received a total investment of Rs. 50 crore under its Series A round, thereby showcasing investor confidence in women-oriented service companies and rapid growth in India's burgeoning beauty and wellness economy.

Similarly, Pramatra Space was able to secure pre-seed investments from SeaFund Ventures, which shows that investors continue to show interest in young innovative startups that have their focus on advanced technologies and space technology in particular. It is also notable that more and more industries are allowing room for women.

Overall, it can be said that women entrepreneurship is gradually moving towards becoming an important part of the innovation and startup economy in India.

This week also saw the announcement of several important leadership roles being taken up by women in the business world.

All these appointments reflect the growing centrality of women in shaping organizational strategy, business transformation, and branding.

Sports Central: Women Athletes Continue to Elevate India’s Sporting Identity

India’s sports scene has seen a steady pace of development, with notable achievements being recorded by female athletes as well as sports personalities.

The BCCI has named three female ex-India cricketers, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Sunetra Paranjpe, and V.R. Vanitha, as specialist coaches for the Centre of Excellence located in Bengaluru, in an effort to develop the game among women. This move reflects the emphasis laid by the BCCI on talent nurturing, succession planning, and preparing their players at an elite level owing to the increasing success story of women’s cricket and the WPL.

Women’s India team will have a significant pre-match practice series against Women’s England in a three match T20I series before participating in the next ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled to commence on June 12, 2026. This tour will be a vital element in assessing team combinations, sorting out the batting line up and evaluating squad depth in tough English weather conditions before participating in the global championship. India starts their tour with a well-balanced and flexible team that is led by Harmanpreet Kaur while Smriti Mandhana is the vice captain.

Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who is the skipper of the Indian women's cricket team, was presented with the Padma Shri Award by President Droupadi Murmu recently owing to her great service to Indian cricket and winning the World Cup with the "Women in Blue." She is one of those sportspersons who have been honored this year; the other being the senior batsman Rohit Sharma, who plays for the Team India. Only these two players received this honor out of all the cricketers this year.

Moreover, three successful women baseballers hailing from Punjab - Amanjot Kaur Bains, Arshdeep Kaur and Virpal – were conferred upon with the distinguished Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award, the highest sporting accolade in the state, for their meritorious contributions to baseball along with consistent performance at national and international forums.

Both Arshdeep Kaur and Virpal, being villagers of Gidderwindi village close to Jagraon, Ludhiana, managed to succeed despite the absence of any facilities and despite all odds. Amanjot Kaur Bains also has numerous victories and medals speaking volumes about her talent.

Also, India succeeded in recording a remarkable feat by clinching both categories of the inaugural South Asia Soft Hockey Championship in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2026. The success became a very significant one because India's men's and women's teams clinched the trophy for the championship title. In the women’s category, India showcased its talent and tactics as the country managed to win the finals with an impressive score line of 6-0 against Nepal.

Collectively, all these factors point to the changing position of women athletes from being on the periphery of India’s sports industry to being at the core of its international ambitions.

Sustainability, Livelihoods & Grassroots Transformation

Sustainability and livelihood programs that are led by women were yet another set of developments worthy of mention in relation to economic empowerment and sustainable development.

The Government of Chhattisgarh has recently approved the ‘Dweepti Yojana’ for 2026, 2031, which is a women-centric clean energy initiative focused on creating ‘Solar Didis’ in rural areas. Implemented through the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and Bihan self-help groups, the scheme aims to position women as technicians, operators, and managers in the village energy ecosystem.

The programme will train women to operate and manage solar-powered infrastructure such as irrigation pumps, flour mills, and cold storages, strengthening both renewable energy adoption and rural livelihoods.

The Week in Perspective

The combined progress observed during the current week underscores a more profound transformation that is currently unfolding in Indian institutions, economy, and society. Whether they have been related to judicial recommendations or governmental appointments, to startup investments, sporting achievements, or sustainability efforts, women have been consistently rising to prominence as key players in various areas.

Notably, many of these events are not associated with token representation or single accomplishments anymore but point toward a new reality of women assuming roles of responsibility, power, and influence.
