Punjab Women Baseball Stars Receive Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award

Three accomplished women baseball players from Punjab — Amanjot Kaur Bains, Arshdeep Kaur and Virpal — have been honoured with the prestigious Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award, the state’s highest sports honour, for their exceptional contribution to baseball and consistent achievements at national and international levels.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann presented the awards to 87 sportspersons during a state-level felicitation ceremony, on Sunday. The three baseball stars also got a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh each for their rather remarkable performances, and the sort of dedication they showed toward the sport.

Arshdeep Kaur and Virpal, both residents of Gidderwindi village near Jagraon in Ludhiana district, managed to rise to prominence even with limited resources and infrastructure and all. They finished their graduation from Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana while also keeping pace in baseball at national tournaments, almost side by side.

Amanjot Kaur Bains, who comes from Kishanpura near Kurali in Rupnagar district, pursued her postgraduation from Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana. She earned recognition, through several medal-winning shows , which were repeated many times.

Amanjot Bains won gold medals in the 29th, 30th and 31st Senior National Baseball Championships, held in Goa, Karnataka and Odisha respectively. Her biggest milestone came in 2016 when she captained the Indian women’s baseball team at the 7th Women’s Baseball World Cup in Gijang, South Korea.

Arshdeep Kaur secured a silver medal in the All India University Baseball Championship in 2015 and then she got gold medals in three straight Senior National Championships .She also represented India at the Women’s Baseball World Cup in Korea.

Virpal similarly delivered medal-winning performances in national and inter-university competitions before representing India at the Baseball World Cup Championship in Korea.

Congratulating the athletes, Punjab Baseball Association secretary Harbir Singh Gill said, “Punjab baseball has created glorious history. This is a historic achievement and a matter of immense pride for the state.”

Association president Sukhdev Singh Aulakh added that “the achievements of these women players would inspire the next generation to pursue sports fearlessly.”
