Dr Swapna Yendru: Empowering Women with Access to Quality Healthcare

By: Dr Swapna Yendru, Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Swapna Healthcare

At the heart of every flourishing society lies the health of its women and children. This advancement relies heavily on both, scientific advancements and human empathy.

Guided by empathy and grounded in expertise, Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, Dr Swapna Yendru leads her career with compassion, ensuring that women’s health continues to benefit from global best practices.

Armed with an MBBS from Hyderabad and PG in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Mangalore and Hyderabad, Dr Swapna currently specialises in high-risk obstetrics and advanced gynaecological surgery and endoscopy.

At the helm of Hyderabad-based Swapna Healthcare, Dr Swapna is committed to empowering women with access to quality healthcare services and knowledge at every stage of their life from adolescence, pregnancy, middle-age and menopause thereafter.

Take us through the formative years and the key influences that influenced your life’s trajectory.

Both my parents were doctors pursuing advanced training abroad. Hence, the formative years of my life were spent with my grandparents who played a pivotal role in shaping me. My grandmother, instilled in me the love for curiosity, and independent thought process.

My grandfather, a principled leader and respected communist, instilled in me values such as equality, respect, and the conviction that true goodness lies within oneself.

These lessons continue to define how I approach medicine, leadership, and life today.

What inspired your foray into healthcare and specialization as a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician?

I was fortunate enough to grow up observing patient interactions, medical practices, and the responsibility doctors carry. Witnessing the respect my parents received for their dedicated, ethical, and empathetic service inspired me to take the same path.

My specialization in gynaecology and obstetrics felt like a natural extension of their legacy. Growing up in a home with conversations centered around women’s well-being and empowerment, it was only natural for me to embrace the same path and purpose.

Another reason that motivated me was the happiness I saw families felt after childbirth. The hospital seemed to be filled with celebrations.

Success Comes From Being Fluid And Knowing When To Realign One’s Priorities

What have been some of the most crucial junctures in your professional career?

As a specialist in high-risk obstetrics and advanced gynaecological and laparoscopic surgery, my foremost responsibility has always been towards women at every stage at their lives. This allows me to serve them in building a safe future for themselves, not only physical, but also mental and emotional health.

Crucial points in my journey so far include certification in laparoscopy, advancing high-risk obstetrics, and making minimal access surgery widely available to patients.

Equally important has been the commitment of training the next generation of doctors, with new postgraduate trainees joining us every six months to learn and carry forward this expertise. I take pride in training young professionals, ensuring they understand the importance and correct usage of advanced techniques.

What’s the underlying vision behind Swapna Healthcare?

Swapna Healthcare is an institution founded by my parents over 40 years ago. I joined the hospital with a focus on expanding the scope beyond treatment to bring holistic care. I introduced multi-disciplinary teams and specialists to ensure that women receive comprehensive support.

‘Prevention is better than cure’, has been central to our hospital’s approach. For me every patient interaction becomes an opportunity to talk about preventive healthcare, from early screening to annual check-ups.

We highlight and educate patients about the importance of early detection, so that small health concerns are identified and resolved early, preventing larger complications.

Which industry best practices does Swapna Healthcare follow? How are consistent positive patient outcomes ensured?

Joining a hospital established by my parents provided me with a platform to strengthen its patient-care model. Ensuring that our approach is not limited to procedures alone, I focus on delivering services such as preventive healthcare, cancer screening, nutrition and exercise programs.

By bringing in new people, team, and structured systems, we have positioned the hospital as a center of excellence in comprehensive women’s healthcare.

A dedicated menopause clinic has been up and running, addressing both physical and emotional changes women experience at this stage. For proper aid, we manage a spectrum of concerns and also educate patients about the onset of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes.

Through the adolescent health clinic, we promote vaccinations, menstrual hygiene, fitness, nutrition, and cancer prevention, helping young women build lifelong healthy habits. We also educated young and expecting mothers about the right nutrition and exercise programs.

What challenges do you encounter as a Gynaecologist & Obstetrician and how do you overcome them?

I am of a strong view that for any practicing doctor, ongoing education and awareness of global advancements are highly crucial. With the continuous upgradation of skills through workshops, online conferences, and emerging treatment modalities, one can maintain excellence and provide patients with the most effective, modern care. Effective time management is key to balancing patient care along with continuous learning, and drawing balance between personal and professional life.

Our hospital’s model prioritizes transparency and patient empowerment, where patients feel heard, and are supported with guidance and counselling. We also organize weekly training programs for nurses and administrative staff keeping everyone updated and skilled.

Looking back, which professional milestones standout in your journey?

One of our proudest milestones has been consistently delivering the most advanced medical treatments, from minimally invasive surgeries to comprehensive pain relief for expectant mothers and specialized laser procedures.

I have played a major role in transforming hospital administration by revising SOPs to be more patient-friendly, implementing a decade-long EMR system, and launching the SHC app, giving patients easy access to their records anywhere.

What fulfils me most is the multi-generational trust families place in us, patients seeking me specifically even alongside the legendary Dr Savita, teaching fellows in Minimal Access Surgery and Reproductive Endocrinology, publishing textbook chapters, and seeing children I once delivered return as teens and young adults. Each experience deepens my pride and sense of purpose in our journey at SHC.
