- Intends to empower women runners and promote participation in night sports events
To empower women and make them feel safer after dark, Uber India has partnered with Nike to introduce the “After Dark Tour” India's first mass night run, which will be the nation's largest 10K race. This pioneering effort is aimed at bringing focus to women runners while raising awareness about the need for safe and reliable nighttime transport.
While increasing numbers of women accept flexible work, fitness, and leisure schedules, safety issues remain a major challenge. According to a recent Uber survey in key Indian metros, 85 percent of women reported cancelling or skipping night outings for transportation or safety concerns. Still, 79 percent of those surveyed indicated that they feel more secure taking ridesharing apps like Uber during nighttime than using other modes of travel.
Uber will be the official ride partner of the After Dark Tour and will provide members with safe, convenient transport from and to the event location and the post-race celebration. The partnership falls under the Uber mission of facilitating greater nighttime mobility and giving more women the independence to travel free without compromising choice.
"Women shouldn’t have to shape their lives around safety fears — they should feel confident stepping out anytime," said Shiva Shailendran, Director – Consumer & Growth, Uber India and South Asia. "By providing safe, reliable rides, we’re helping make the night accessible again."
Survey findings also indicate that 94 percent of Uber riders feel ride-hailing services allow them to make spontaneous evening plans, and 88 percent state such services facilitate their late-night work, social, or fitness obligations.
Still further highlighting the role mobility plays in advancing gender equality, a study commissioned by Uber and prepared by Oxford Economics indicates that better access to ride-hailing may expand the female workforce within India's major metros by more than 6 percent by 2028.
Nike India GM Tarundeep Singh further stated that the Mumbai-run is all about "connection, celebration, and confidence," and reiterated that the Uber tie-up will provide a seamless, secure experience for women who take part in the run.
