the^delta prize has launched the Aahaar Bazaar Challenge, a ₹5.25 crore national competition designed to assist home-based women food entrepreneurs in developing sustainable, income-earning businesses. Funded by the State Street Foundation, the program is designed to open up new market possibilities and increase women's earnings from food businesses.
Complementary to India's national objectives like Lakhpati Didi initiative, PMFME scheme, and initiatives under Digital India and Skill India, the challenge is centered on enhancing economic engagement of rural and lower-income urban women.
India's packaged food market will expand to USD 6.4 billion by 2029 from USD 2.8 billion in 2023, with increasing demand for healthy, artisanal, and locally produced food. Nevertheless, the vast majorities of women food entrepreneurs operating from home earn less than ₹4,000/month and sell only a local 2 km radius—often living outside formal business categories.
From 18 months, the Aahaar Bazaar Challenge is designed to identify and support scalable, technology-driven solutions to enable these entrepreneurs to enhance product packaging, digital visibility, compliance, and access to broader markets.
"The issue isn't aspiration—it's access," noted Kanishka Chatterjee, Managing Director of the^delta prize. "This challenge fosters conditions for visibility, revenue, and resilience.
The initiative provides ₹5.25 crore in incentives for effective solutions that enhance the earnings and business sustainability of women foodpreneurs working from home. "Our aspiration is to enable thousands of women to transition from margins to economic inclusion," said Joan Christel, President of State Street Foundation.
Apart from financing, the challenge offers a strong support ecosystem, encompassing partners such as ACT Grants, Acumen, IIMA Ventures, Villgro, Mann Deshi, RangDe, Nasscom Foundation, Udyogini, and The Nudge Institute, among others.
In addition to funding, the challenge is accompanied by a strong ecosystem of support in the form of partners such as ACT Grants, Acumen, IIMA Ventures, Villgro, Mann Deshi, RangDe, Nasscom Foundation, Udyogini, The/Nudge Institute, and others.
