By: Lavanya Ajesh, Vice President, Caterpillar Inc.

Lavanya is a seasoned business leader with extensive experience in engineering, project management, and dealer development across Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East. Since joining Caterpillar in 2008, she has played a key role in driving service excellence and distribution growth globally.

In an insightful interaction with Women Entrepreneurs Review Magazine, Lavanya shares her insights on Africa’s evolving machinery distribution landscape, dealer network development through skill-building, and balancing local culture with global strategies to foster an inclusive, high-performance culture in the article below.

Given the dynamic nature of the market, how would you assess the current landscape in Africa for machinery distribution and aftermarket services?

The potential of Africa extends throughout its territories and functions as a vital economic force for global markets. Throughout recent years this area has emerged as a strategic place for global economies that are rapidly growing. The development rate of Africa has increased the importance of its industrial relationship with mining sectors alongside construction together with energy and transportation sectors. Every major development at a large scale depends heavily on machinery throughout infrastructure development and mining extraction activities.

Africa presents multiple business challenges to international companies because they confront logistical issues and political instabilities together with currency market shifts. The challenging business landscape of this region holds special prospects for delivering an extensive service package. The service experience extends beyond equipment delivery toward generating solutions for maximizing business assets and preventing downtime and simplifying operations.

The African market demands services to extend past equipment delivery alone. Digital solutions together with tools help businesses reach their objectives by minimizing costs while providing superior effectiveness in their processes. Businesses will maintain lasting success in this evolving market when companies provide complete solutions that fulfill specific regional needs of their customers.

As you work towards building a high-performing and inclusive dealer network, how do you focus on skill development?

We focus on continuous learning by investing in a range of programs and learning tools to help employees develop the skills they need at every stage of their careers. The increased complexity of our current business environment demands that we have the right talent in the right place at the right time. I have been a long believer that the primary role a leader has in an organization is to build the bench that comes after her – and this is where we stay focused as a company. We are a global company solving complex problems - each geography and function requires a certain skill set and experience to be able to lead to solutions needed today and tomorrow.

Africa is a vast continent with 54 diverse countries, each with unique geographical and sociocultural characteristics. This is where the wide Cat dealer network is a big advantage. With a deep understanding of local cultural nuances, Cat dealers enable us to provide convenient localized services, thus delivering on Caterpillar’s long-term commitment to Africa. The dealers work in close alignment with our enterprise strategy and are empowered and well-equipped to extend our services and solutions to best suit the unique needs of our customers.

Creating a high-performance culture is key to long-term success. How do you blend local cultural nuances with global business strategies to create a culture of inclusivity and performance?

Another key element for us as a company as we grow is to develop local leaders. They have pride, association and skills to develop solutions best suited for that region. We have programs in place like Emerging Markets Emerging Leaders, which aims to develop in-region future leaders and equip them with the right tools, network and capabilities to lead in an emerging market environment. Having worked across 4 different countries throughout my career, I have leveraged the opportunities for growth and development Caterpillar has consistently provided to develop and empower its leaders to navigate well through cultural nuances. I have been able to have experienced both in the more mature regions, while honing my skills earlier in developing regions, and the journey has been nothing less than fantastic. Our skill-based hiring model aligns closely to the market, while accounting for unique roles and Caterpillar-specific needs. It defines what successful skill application looks like in each role to help employees explore career opportunities that align with their aspirations and strengths and tailor their professional development. It will also allow Caterpillar to cast a wider net to consider both current and prospective employees who possess these skills as opportunities arise.

As we celebrate a significant milestone this year, I take great pride in being part of a team that collaborates with some of the most talented and innovative individuals. These professionals bring fresh ideas and diverse perspectives, driving continuous improvement in products and solutions that are making a positive impact on the world.
