Could you share your educational journey with us? What inspired you to venture into the fashion industry, particularly focusing on Indian textiles?

I pursued a degree in design from SNDT University, followed by advanced studies at the prestigious London College of Fashion. Fashion has always been my true passion, but it was during my educational journey that I discovered a deep appreciation for the rich heritage of Indian textiles and the incredible craftsmanship of our artisans. Through my studies, I had the opportunity to explore various textiles and interact with numerous artisans, which opened my eyes to the immense power and beauty of Indian art and craft. Since establishing my label, I have been committed to promoting different forms of Indian textiles in each of my collections. This dedication to showcasing the diversity of Indian craftsmanship will always remain at the heart of my work. Additionally, my time in London reinforced my admiration for our fabrics, techniques, and embroideries, as I saw firsthand how much they are valued and appreciated on a global scale.

Could you walk us through your previous industry experience? What are some of the key areas of expertise you have developed as a fashion designer?

Right after I finished college, I embarked on the journey of establishing my own brand. Other than the internships I completed during my college years, I never worked or interned with any other designer. This decision turned out to be my greatest advantage, as it allowed me to start fresh, free from the influence of other designers. This independence fostered a strong, original voice and unique ideas that set my brand apart in the market. My designs carried a distinct language that resonated with customers. Additionally, my mother owns a multi-designer store, which provided me with invaluable insights into the commercial side of fashion. Through this experience, I learned how to make creative pieces commercially viable, blending artistic innovation with business acumen. This blend of originality and commercial understanding has been crucial in shaping my career and the success of my brand.

What inspired you to create Label Anushree? Please tell us about the core idea driving this venture and the primary areas in which your brand specializes.

Owning a business has always been my ultimate goal. After discovering my passion for Indian art and textiles, I decided to create a collection for girls who love Indian clothing but prefer to avoid excessive bling. Expressing my personal taste through my brand led to the creation of Label Anushree. Even today, after many years, I strive to maintain the original aesthetics and distinct language that defined my brand from the beginning. My commitment to preserving this vision ensures that Label Anushree continues to resonate with those who appreciate subtle, elegant, and culturally rich Indian fashion.

As a creative professional, where do you find your sources of inspiration?

My primary source of inspiration has always been people. I am particularly motivated by individuals who possess a strong sense of personal style and exhibit dynamic, energetic, and enterprising personalities. Such people drive me to push my boundaries, work harder, and go the extra mile. Creativity, on the other hand, can stem from a multitude of sources. It might be sparked by a visit to a quaint village in India or Europe, or even by a piece of art I encounter at an exhibition. Inspiration can emerge from the most unexpected places, and I firmly believe that without it, we would struggle to thrive.

What do you consider to be some of the most significant challenges faced by fashion designers, and what strategies do you use to address and overcome these obstacles?

When I first began, one of the primary challenges I faced was the replication of my designs; my original prints were often copied. Developing these unique textiles requires significant effort, and seeing them blatantly appropriated was a major issue at the start. However, as I have progressed in my career, I have come to understand that while designs can be imitated, a true vision cannot be replicated. Clients who value the authenticity and high standards of an original brand will always prefer it over counterfeit versions. This realization has come with time and experience, shifting my focus from the issue of imitation to the importance of maintaining a distinctive vision.

Could you highlight some of the most notable professional milestones you’ve reached throughout your career? Additionally, what principles or strategies have guided your success over the years?

I have achieved several significant milestones throughout my career. Notable among them are my fashion show in collaboration with ELLE magazine (The ELLE Graduates) and having our collections featured on prominent actresses such as Priyanka Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Madhuri Dixit, among others. We have also crafted custom clothing for Bollywood films and been featured in leading publications like The Statesman, Vogue India, and Hindustan Times. My guiding principle has always been to continually aim higher and maintain a relentless work ethic.
