1. Data & Intuition Based Decision-making

Decision making is one of the most crucial skills required for women entrepreneurs. Sound decision-making directly determines the future of the enterprise. From major business decisions such as picking the right target audience, choosing the technology tools to, every day operational decisions, an entrepreneur is required to take crucial decisions at every step.

In the modern unpredictable business world, decision making is not just the ability to have all the answers ready in advance. Instead, it a process of weighing in different factors and taking a well-informed decision.

For Indian lifestyle and premium spirits entrepreneur Sanya V. Jain, it has been crucial to not wait for the right moment to make a decision. The Co-Founder of Smoke Lab and Creative Director, streetwear label Smoke Lab Wear, says, “I've learned that some of the best business decisions are made before you have every answer. Markets move too quickly to wait for perfect certainty, and if you spend too much time looking for the 'right' moment, you often miss the opportunity altogether.”

Decision-making for Sanya has hinged on data and instinct alike. She adds, “For me, every decision is a balance between data and instinct. Numbers provide direction, but they don't tell the whole story. Understanding your consumer, staying true to your brand's purpose and thinking beyond short-term outcomes are equally important.”

For Sanya, confidence is based on preparation, consumer knowledge, and alignment with objectives. She suggests that entrepreneurs strike a balance between data and intuition to make decisions that enable the right outcomes.

Key practices for entrepreneurs to improve decision-making:

  • Analyse Before Acting: Do analysis through research and numbers before taking any crucial decision.
  • Prioritise Long-Term Vision: Choose opportunities that align with the larger purpose of the business.
  • Adapt Through Experience: Failures should be taken as learning experiences for future decisions.

2. Building Lasting Customer Relationships

The relationship between customer and business has become one of the biggest distinguishing features for companies today. Consumers today are spoilt for choices in today’s hyper-competitive market landscape. Therefore, it is important not only to market products but also to develop trust, value, and experience to build customer loyalty.

It is essential for entrepreneurs to understand customers by staying in constant contact with them. The ones who do so successfully can gain consumer loyalty.

Entrepreneur, Daneesh Davar, Co-Founder, The Func. Lab and SOHFIT, believes that customer loyalty cannot be achieved through retention techniques; it is built on trust.

“Building lasting customer relationships has never been about finding better ways to retain customers. In my experience, retention is simply the outcome of trust. It starts long before someone makes a purchase,” says Daneesh.

Consumers today are incredibly informed and aware, which makes them better judges of brands. “Today's consumers are incredibly informed and can tell when a brand is overpromising. We've always been open about our ingredients, our formulations, and even the areas where we're still learning and improving,” she adds.

Education is another aspect of building relationships according to her. By educating customers about the purpose of the product, its functioning and features, brands can build stronger relationships with consumers.

Making Consumers Feel Valued: Taking the conversation ahead, Sujata Biswas, Co-founder, Suta, an ethnic design house highlights that when customers feel like they are heard and valued, they become a part of a brand’s story.

“At Suta, we've always believed that people don't just buy clothes. They become a part of a story,” she shares. “Trust is built when a brand is consistent, transparent, and genuinely cares. Over time, our customers have become our biggest advocates because they feel seen, heard, and at home with Suta. That's the relationship we strive to nurture every single day,” she adds.

Sujata’s belief comes from the many instances where customers have left feedback that has been helpful in making changes and improving products at Suta. Numerous interactions with consumers at the store, through social media, and even WhatsApp messages has helped her make consumer feel valued.

Key practices for entrepreneurs to improve customer loyalty & connect:

  • Listen Continuously: Use customer feedback to improve products, services, and experiences.
  • Build Trust First: Focus on transparency and value instead of short-term sales.
  • Create Customer Communities: Turn buyers into long-term supporters of the brand.

3. Inculcating Adaptability

Adaptability has become one of the most critical qualities for entrepreneurs in today’s dynamic marketplace, characterized by constant changes in the nature of the market, technology, and the consumer behaviours. Companies unwilling to adapt often find themselves becoming irrelevant while those who willing to change are more likely to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Adaptability for female entrepreneurs involves willingness to learn, experiment and adapt strategies without forgetting their goals. It could be about technology, responding to consumers' demands, or business models, among other issues.

As per Alpana Chhibber, the founder of The BOB Project (Business Over Brunch), curiosity is the key element of staying relevant in the dynamic business environment.

Alpana believes that organizations need to constantly ask questions and stay connected to the people. “We make customer feedback a continuous part of product development, track emerging behavioural shifts, and regularly challenge our own assumptions about what worked yesterday. We also believe in testing new ideas early, learning from the outcomes, and adapting quickly without losing sight of our long-term vision,” she shares.

Alpana strongly believes that technology can help businesses grow, but knowledge about people can be an entrepreneur’s greatest competitive advantage. Organizations, which are addressing today's problems and thinking of tomorrow, have higher chances of sustainable growth.

As a founder Alpana entrepreneurial strategy emphasizes on being adaptive. But it does not necessarily mean changing direction all the time. Rather, being flexible enough to innovate and evolve is what really helps an entrepreneur succeed.

Key practices entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs to improve adaptability:

  • Track Market Shifts: Stay updated on industry trends, customer behaviour, and emerging opportunities.
  • Experiment Quickly: Test new ideas, measure results, and improve based on learnings.
  • Stay Purpose-Driven: Adapt strategies without compromising the brand’s core values.

4. Negotiating with Confidence

For any successful entrepreneur, negotiation is a crucial skill. Negotiation is a skill that helps an entrepreneur converse and bargain with clients, investors, vendors, employees, and business partners alike. Nevertheless, negotiation is not about winning, instead it is about establishing mutual agreements that work in the business’ favour.

It is common for many entrepreneurs to be hesitant in negotiations. This may happen due to the fear of losing the opportunity or coming off as being too demanding. However, building confidence, knowing business figures, and setting priorities can help one negotiate successfully.

Real estate entrepreneur, Rashmi Ahuja, Chairperson, Ahuja Residences, beleives that negotiation is all about building a relationship.

“One of the most valuable lessons I have learned is that successful negotiation is not about winning an argument, it is about building a relationship where both sides see value. A negotiation should always feel like a win-win for both sides, because that is what lays the foundation for trust and long-term partnerships,” she says.

For Rashmi, preparation is the bedrock of confidence. “Confidence comes from preparation,” she says. An entrepreneur should be well prepared with exact numbers, priorities, and communicate them clearly.

Rashmi also emphasizes that listening plays an equally important role in negotiations. The more you listen to someone else's expectations, the better results you will get.

It becomes especially useful for women entrepreneurs to improve their negotiation skills as it will enable them to speak up on behalf of their companies and their own worth.

Key practices for entrepreneurs to become better negotiators:

  • Prepare Before Negotiating: Understand numbers, expectations, and possible outcomes beforehand.
  • Know Your Limits: Clearly define non-negotiables while remaining flexible where possible.
  • Focus on Mutual Value: Build partnerships where both sides benefit.

5. Building a Credible Digital Presence

Digital platforms have completely transformed how businesses connect with their target customers. For an eternally-online audience, it is important that brands build visibility in the digital world.

However, it is important to understand that digital marketing is not just about attracting audience attention, instead it is as important to build credibility as a brand. For medical tourism entrepreneur Sonam Garg Sharma, digital success is about creating communications of value. As founder & CEO of Medical Linkers, she has witnessed firsthand how consumers relate to brands that help them see their way clear through the tricky maze of healthcare services.

“Today, one of the most important skills for any woman entrepreneur is understanding that visibility is not the same as trust. In healthcare, especially, people do not connect with a brand because it is posting the most. They connect when they feel heard, guided and reassured,” she explains.

At Medical Linkers, digital media helps reach out to the audience, make sense of complicated concepts, and solve consumer problems.

Sonam asserts that while trends and technologies can be subject to change, there will always be the need for integrity and humane communication.

“For me, online growth has always come from listening closely, sharing credible information and building relationships slowly. Trends will keep changing, platforms will keep changing, but the need for honest, human and useful communication will not. Digital success is not about quick visibility alone. It is about becoming a voice people can trust when it really matters,” she adds.

This viewpoint is indicative of the broader trend within digital marketing where authenticity and value-based communication have become more valued than reach alone.

Key practices for entrepreneurs to build credible digital presence:

  • Create Valuable Content: Share information that educates, informs, or solves customer problems.
  • Build Authentic Connections: Focus on trust and engagement rather than only visibility.
  • Understand Digital Trends: Adapt to changing platforms, tools, and customer behaviours.

6.  Learning Which Opportunities to Say ‘No’ to

The ability to say "no" is one of the most underrated entrepreneurial skills. Early-stage founders often believe growth comes from saying yes to every opportunity, customer request, partnership, or meeting. In reality, sustainable growth often depends on knowing what to decline.

Saying no can be especially important for women entrepreneurs. Research has shown that women leaders are often expected to take on additional mentoring, administrative, or emotional labor alongside running their businesses. Building the confidence to decline requests that don't align with business priorities helps protect time, maintain focus, and lead more effectively.

Swati Saboo, Co-Founder, Scrabble vouches for the importance of knowing which opportunities to say ‘no' to. Recalling her experience as an early-stage founder, she says, “When we launched Scrabble, to solve the gaps in leadership recruitment, we were driven with unbridled passion to solve real-world problems. We took up every mandate because no problem seemed unsolvable in front of our team’s passion and drive.”

But with time, Swati realized that along with passion and zeal, restraint is also required. “Today, before taking up a mandate, we evaluate how it fits the larger picture for Scrabble, and if it is going to help us inch closer to that vision or distract us from it.”

According to Swati, young entrepreneurs face situations where they are tempted to go for every opportunity. However, selecting the right ones is what can build a strong foundation.

For founders, saying 'no' does not mean curtailing their ambition, but it means channelling their energy into opportunities which make an impact.

Key practices for entrepreneurs to Identify the Right Opportunities:

  • Prioritise Strategically: Focus on opportunities that contribute to long-term business goals.
  • Develop Self-Awareness: Recognise when to pursue, delegate, or decline opportunities.
