Women's Quota to Strengthen Democracy by 2029: PM Modi
By: WE Staff | Tuesday, 14 April 2026
- Narendra Modi pushes for full women’s reservation by 2029 elections to strengthen Indian democracy.
- Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam ensures 33 percent seats for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
- The government plans urgent amendments to implement reservation before 2029.
Prime Minister Modi advised that if elections to the Lok Sabha and various assembly elections are held in 2029 with full women's reservation, it will make Indian democracy much stronger and vibrant.
He also stated in his letter that since women are dominating every field, it is only appropriate for women to dominate within their country's legislatures.
Mr. PM encouraged the members of the Legislature to pass the necessary amendments to the 'Nari Sakti Vandan’ as soon as possible and that failing to do so would be a grave injustice to the women of India.
"Our democracy will become stronger and more vibrant if the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and various Assembly elections that year are held with women's reservation fully in place," he said in the letter posted on his X.
The prime minister said the daughters of India cannot be asked to wait endlessly for what is rightfully theirs.
"When the voice of women becomes stronger in our legislatures, the voice of democracy itself becomes stronger," Modi said.
"I seek your blessings and the blessings of crores of women across the length and breadth of India for the upcoming Parliament sitting and for the passage of the constitutional amendment. I urge you all to write to your local MPs and encourage them as they participate in this historic Parliament sitting," he added.
The Indian Parliament passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam enhancing representation of women in the legislative bodies long awaited dream of women. One third of the seats will be reserved in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies for women.
Amendments to the Women Reservation Bill will also increase the Lok Sabha to 816 members of which 273 members will be for women. The provision to provide 33 percent of Lok Sabha and State Assemblies to women was by amending the Constitution in the year 2023.
The existing law did not provide any means for reservation of women until 2034 as it was required to go through a delimitation process after the Census of 2027.
Changes to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam were immediately necessary to start implementation for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. For that, the Government is convening a special sitting to make the amendments.
