PM Sends Letter to LS & RS Pitching for Women's Reservation Act
By: WE Staff | Monday, 13 April 2026
- According to Narendra Modi, the hour is ripe to enforce the Women's Reservation Bill with its true essence prior to the elections in 2029.
- He appealed for conducting elections in Lok Sabha and the assemblies in 2029 by following the quota for women.
- Through a letter written to LS and RS floor leaders, he demanded that Members of Parliament unite to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
The Prime Minister stated the time has arrived for implementing the Women’s Reserve Act fully. He believes the quota for women should exist for the 2029 parliamentary and state elections as well as at a future date as proposed under the Women’s Reservation Act.
In a letter dated April 11 to the floor leaders of both houses of Parliament prior to Parliament meeting for 3 days in special sessions, PM Modi expressed hope that all members can unite to support amendment legislation to the Women’s Reservation Act.
“Following much discussion, the conclusion was reached that the time has arrived for full implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act nationally. The 2029 Lok Sabha and State elections cannot occur without the Women’s Reservation Act.”
Parliament has decided to extend the Budget session and hold a special three-day sitting of the House from April 16-18.
The Women's Reservation Act will also increase Lok Sabha seats to 816, of which 273 will be reserved for women.
Through an amendment to the Constitution, women were given 33 percent reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies in 2023.
However, because of the requirements that the women’s quota will not be implemented until after the delimitation exercise has been completed on the basis of the 2027 Census, the reservation contained in the Act will not have been enforceable until 2034 if the existing statutory scheme were to continue.
Amendments must be made to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam before it can be implemented for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Therefore, the Government is convening the special session to approve the amendments to the Act.
