  • Data-led tracking and training key to advancing women in leadership

The number of women in senior positions and leadership positions in India has significantly increased, according to the second AIMA and KPMG Women Leadership in Corporate India Report 2026. The study reveals accelerated progress in gender representation and diversity, as 44% of surveyed organisations in 2026 reported women holding a minimum of 30% of leadership positions, up from 35% in 2024. Notably, representation beyond the 50% mark rose from 12% to 20%.

The report was unveiled by Smriti Zubin during All India Management Association’s 70th Foundation Day programme. Smriti laid stress on the well-documented challenges posed by low female representation in corporate India, emphasizing the voids and prospects for growth in the broken pipeline. As a solution, she urged the need for cohesive, inclusive, and multi-sector efforts to strengthen the existing system and create meaningful change.

Shikha Kamboj, Partner at KPMG in India, emphasized a declining satisfaction level in leadership development, hinting at a need for robust, end-to-end support system for women. As per the report, there are several organizational structures that serve as key drivers of women’s progression, with flexibility and clarity remaining central to sustain leadership pipelines.

In views of T.V. Narendra, President of All India Management Association and CEO & MD of Tata Steel, there is need for data-driven framework to track progress in gender inclusion at leadership levels. The report serves as a strategic resource for both industry and policy stakeholders. Despite the modest indicators, this representation stands a strong testimony to changing times in the Indian corporate ecosystem based on gender-specific inclusion becoming a norm.
