TN Expands Women Entrepreneur Loan Scheme Across State

The Tamil Nadu government is expanding its focus on women entrepreneurship, business growth, and financial inclusion by taking its new women entrepreneur loan scheme across all 234 Assembly constituencies in the state. Under the Vetri Magalir Thozhilmunaivor Membattu Thittam (Successful Women Entrepreneurship Development Program), eligible women looking to start a new enterprise or expand an existing business can seek institutional finance ranging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 5 crore.

The program aims to introduce women entrepreneurs and bring them into the formal business banking system across the state of Tamil Nadu. In the statewide outreach, the MLAs have been requested to recommend 10 potential women entrepreneurs from every constituency and provide their profile to the Industries Department for further evaluation.

The constituency-level exercise could create an initial pool of up to 2,340 prospective women entrepreneurs across Tamil Nadu. However, being identified by an MLA will not automatically guarantee financial assistance. Eligibility and other applicable criteria will be considered to review the profiles before the applicants are shortlisted for support by the concerned department.

Under the program, loans will be provided through the Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation (TIIC). The interest rate has been fixed at 9.95% per annum on a diminishing-balance basis, while the repayment period can extend up to nine years. The amount sanctioned to each applicant will depend on the assessment of the business proposal and applicable lending requirements.

The scheme covers both women who are planning to establish their first enterprise and existing women-led businesses seeking finance for expansion. The government’s constituency-wide approach is also intended to reach potential entrepreneurs beyond major cities and established industrial centres, creating wider access to entrepreneurship opportunities, business finance, and enterprise development.

S. Keerthana, Minister for Industries and Investment Promotion, said that access to capital can remain a major challenge for women with the ambition and ability to build businesses.

“There are thousands of women across Tamil Nadu with the ambition, ability and determination to build their own enterprises, but access to capital can often be the barrier between an idea and a business,” Keerthana said.

She further underlined that the initiative is intended to go beyond providing loans and create opportunities for women to build sustainable enterprises and employment.

“Our objective is not merely to provide credit. It is to create pathways for women to become entrepreneurs, employers and contributors to Tamil Nadu’s economic growth,” she said.

The program therefore places women’s economic empowerment, access to finance, entrepreneurship development, business expansion, and employment generation at the centre of its outreach.

By taking the identification process to every Assembly constituency, the government aims to bring more aspiring women entrepreneurs into the formal financing ecosystem. For women seeking to transform business ideas into enterprises or strengthen existing ventures, the scheme creates a structured route to seek institutional financial support, subject to eligibility and loan approval.

The initiative adds another focus to Tamil Nadu’s broader efforts to expand women-led entrepreneurship and access to formal business credit across the state.
