TATA WPL 2026: UP Warriorz Hold Off MI, Win by 22 Runs

  • UPW won by 22 runs to complete a league double over MI.
  • Lanning and Litchfield's 119-run partnership propelled UP Warriorz to 187.
  • Whereas Mumbai had a slow start, a middle-order collapse derailed the chase.

UP‍‌‍‍‌ Warriorz scored a convincing 22-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the TATA WPL, completing a league double over the defending champions and sending them home on their third defeat of the season. The result was UPW's second successive win after a difficult start to the 2026 campaign and came off a dominant batting display followed by disciplined bowling in Navi ‍‌‍‍‌Mumbai.

Starting‍‌‍‍‌ their innings, UPW gained momentum after a strong 119-run stand between Meg Lanning and Phoebe Litchfield that followed losing Kiran Navgire for a golden duck. Lanning took the initiative from the start, regularly scoring boundaries during the powerplay, while Litchfield gradually gained self-belief in the middle overs. Both batswomen reached smooth fifties as Lanning hit 70 from 45 balls and Litchfield made 61 from 43 as UPW took the lead. Even though Mumbai Indians pulled back by dismissing both set batters in quick succession, additional runs from Chloe Tryon and Harleen Deol ensured UPW declared a challenging target of 187 for 8, notwithstanding Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr bowling effectively in the death ‍‌‍‍‌overs.

Mumbai’s‍‌‍‍‌ chase again got off to a really slow start with only 38 runs scored in the powerplay. The hosts were put under immediate pressure due to the early wickets, and Sciver-Brunt’s dismissal right after the loss of the fielding restrictions only worsened their situation. UP‍‌‍‍‌ Warriorz kept the scenario in their favour in the middle overs as Shikha Pandey, Deepti Sharma and Sophie Ecclestone got wickets at regular intervals thereby halving Mumbai’s total.

The 83-run stand between Amelia Kerr and Amanjot Kaur gave the home crowd a glimpse of hope and Amanjot struck three sixes, however, the required run rate was too high. The second last over saw the dismissal of Amanjot, thus, ending the resistance and the score at Mumbai was 165 for 6, a case of the team falling short when UPW tuck in a big ‍‌‍‍‌win.
