Mumbai-based residential solar startup SolarSquare has raised $53 million in a Series C funding round led by B Capital, with participation from existing investors Lightspeed, Elevation Capital, Lowercarbon Capital, Rainmatter, and Good Capital.
The new round brings the total amount raised by the company up to over $100 million.
Established in 2015 by Shreya Mishra, Neeraj Jain & Nikhil Nahar, SolarSquare is an end-to-end rooftop solar service provider that caters to residential customers with consultation, designing, installation, financing support and maintenance.
The funds will be applied to rapidly expand into new cities, further develop its technology platform, recruit staff, and scale its home energy products, such as solar, financing, battery storage, and energy management.
SolarSquare has been able to provide power to over 50,000 homes in India and is on track to generate annual revenue of over Rs 1,000 crore, the company said.
“Five years ago, we made a conviction-led bet that every Indian home will be powered by rooftop solar. At the time, residential solar was still very nascent, with barely 1 lakh homes going solar per year. Today, the category has inflected with 1 lakh homes adopting solar every 10 days in India,” said Shreya Mishra, co-founder and CEO of SolarSquare.
It says it has the largest rooftop solar energy portfolio in India and was the first company in the country to offer performance guarantees for rooftop solar projects.
Key Highlights:
- SolarSquare raises $53M in Series C funding led by B Capital
- Funds will support expansion, technology upgrades, and home energy solutions
- The company has powered 50,000+ homes and targets India's growing rooftop solar market
The investment is coming as more and more households are going solar, with government schemes like PM Surya Ghar and a rise in electricity tariffs helping the trend gain momentum. SolarSquare estimates the number of viable rooftops in India around 70 million and penetration on rooftop solar is less than 5%.
In December 2024, SolarSquare had raised $40 million in a Series B investment led by Lightspeed and including Lightrock, Lowercarbon Capital, Rainmatter and Gruhas Proptech.
SolarSquare is a competitor with companies like ZunRoof, Glow Solar, Mysun, Oorjan Cleantech and Freyr Energy in the rooftop solar market segment for residential buildings. The company has been trying to stand out from the pack with its vertically integrated approach, technology platform and guarantees to customers.
SolarSquare will strengthen its market presence and penetrate new markets in other cities around India, it said. The company says the integration of financing, battery storage, and energy management services with solar production can “further speed up the adoption of solar by homeowners.”
As the demand for distributed clean energy solutions continues to rise, companies are increasingly moving away from solar panel installations towards offering long-term services and products.
SolarSquare is joining a slew of climate-tech and clean-energy startups, which have garnered investor interest due to India's energy transition, as it secures fresh funds.SolarSquare has raised funds to join a clutch of climate-tech and clean-energy startups, which have caught the investment eye as India transitions to cleaner energy. The investments in companies that meet the growing demand for energy, yet also bolster the country's sustainability targets, remain strong.
The latest funding round is a testament to the long-term potential of the residential solar market and the expected contribution of rooftop solar in India's renewable energy transition.
