Signalling a new beginning, Sarah Mullay was appointed as female Archbishop of Canterbury, leading 85 million Anglicans worldwide following a historic and symbolically rich ceremony. Her appointment is seen as a historic shift in institutional leadership. Sarah became an integral part of the momentous occasion and took her seat on the historic Chair of St Augustine at Canterbury Cathedral, before an audience of 2,000 high-profile guests, including Prince William, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Keir Starmer.

Sarah focused on the theme of peace and unity, referring to areas of conflict in her first address, as the event represented tradition and inclusivity. Philip Mounstephen announced that the appointment as a landmark moment, with the inclusion of women into an office, ‘older than the crown’ signalling a historic shift in institutional leadership.

As I begin my ministry today as Archbishop of Canterbury, I say again to God: ‘Here I am’,” she told the congregation. “As I look back over my life – at the teenage Sarah, who put her faith in God and made a commitment to follow Jesus – I could never have imagined the future that lay ahead,” Sarah said.

In an endeavour to recognize the Church’s safeguarding shortcomings, she underscored how her leadership approach and vision will focus on truth, compassion, justice. During the ceremony, Sarah marked her arrival by knocking on the cathedral’s west door, followed by the service that blended heritage, culture, and global representation. The ceremony was marked by emphasizing global outreach through diverse language and aligned thematically with the Feast of The Annunciation.
