Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah met with President Droupadi Murmu separately at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday. While the official reasons for these back-to-back meetings were not disclosed, the timing of the meetings has sparked speculation due to the current state of the political and geopolitical climate.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan shared on their official X account, "Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan." Hours later, another tweet wrote, "Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan."
The Home Minister also posted on their X, “Called on Honorable President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”
The Prime Minister held his first meeting with the President after a recent visit to the UK and the Maldives. The meetings were conducted after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post on July 21, citing health reasons. As Vice President, he also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission has scheduled the vice-presidential election for September 9. The electoral college for the election includes all members of the Lok Sabha and both elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.
The Prime Minister met with the President for the first time following his recent visits to the UK and the Maldives. The meeting took place amid a parliamentary deadlock, with the Opposition demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar ahead of the state elections. Since the Monsoon session began on July 21, apart from discussions on Operation Sindoor, parliamentary proceedings have been minimal.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha has approved a six-month extension of President’s Rule in Manipur, first imposed on February 13, while the Rajya Sabha has yet to deliberate on the motion. The meeting also followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on Indian exports and further penalties in response to India’s defense and oil deals with Russia.
