Meghalaya Tech Push Creates 1,400 Jobs, Over 700 for Women

Meghalaya is strengthening its position as an emerging IT hub in Northeast India, with expanding technology infrastructure, rising local employment, and a growing focus on artificial intelligence. The state’s technology push has created more than 1,400 jobs, including over 700 positions for women, at the Shillong Technology Park.

The first phase of the Shillong Technology Park at Umsawli in New Shillong is now fully occupied by IT and IT-enabled services companies, banks, software firms and other technology businesses. The facility is generating new employment opportunities for local youth, including a significant number of women.

The expansion is set to continue, with the second phase of the technology park, covering around 1.8 lakh square feet, nearing completion. The facility is expected to accommodate additional IT and ITeS companies and further expand employment opportunities in the state.

Meghalaya’s technology development is being supported by its IT & ITeS Promotion Policy, 2024, which aims to attract investment, encourage technology businesses and strengthen the state’s digital economy. The government has set a target of developing a $16 billion economy by 2032 and aims to place Meghalaya among India’s top 10 states for IT and ITeS within the next decade.

The state is also extending its technology infrastructure beyond Shillong. The Tura IT Park at Doldegre in the Garo Hills is being developed with ₹126.94 crore in funding under the PM-DevINE scheme. As of late August 2026, the project had reached 78.67% completion and is expected to create another technology base for businesses and employment in the region.

Alongside infrastructure development, Meghalaya is investing in AI and digital skills. The government is recruiting AI trainers for institutions including Shillong Polytechnic, ITI Rynjah and ITI Tura. The Meghalaya State Skill Development Society is also expanding training programmes in artificial intelligence and machine learning to prepare young people for emerging technology roles.

Industry engagement has grown through initiatives such as the Regional AI Impact Conference, which attracted more than 700 participants, and AI SPARK, a programme designed to support AI-focused startups. The NASSCOM Industry Leaders’ Meet held in Shillong in May 2026 also brought industry representatives together to discuss technology, employment and future skills.

Technology adoption is simultaneously expanding across public services. Shillong’s Integrated Command and Control Centre, established under the Smart City Mission, uses AI-enabled video analytics for surveillance, traffic management and emergency response. The state is also developing an AI Centre of Excellence and Data Labs, while IoT technology is being used to monitor 70,000 water springs for improved water-resource management.

With technology parks expanding, AI skills gaining importance, and women accounting for more than half of the jobs created in its first technology park phase, Meghalaya is combining economic growth with greater digital and gender inclusion.
