Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Launches Yamuna Cleanliness Drive

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta recently organized an extensive cleanliness drive at several points along the riverbanks of the Yamuna River on Sunday. The ‘Yamuna Riverbank Cleanliness Campaign 2026’ was spread across 28 important ghats and other areas around the river with a total length of about 22 kilometres.
The CM joined thousands of volunteers from over 500 different organizations while participating in a Shramdaan drive held at Geeta Colony Ghat. While discussing the need to restore and maintain the Yamuna and involve people, Rekha said that Yamuna River is an important natural resource for people in Delhi with great cultural, religious and environmental importance.
During the drive, she urged citizens to take an active role in maintaining hygiene and preserving the environment and protecting the river continuously. By staying committed throughout the year, she emphasized upon the fact that conscious and continuous involvement by all citizens could bring about desirable results and changes.

In the course of the program, volunteers were asked to assume responsibility for the river by signing a public cleanliness pledge. According to the pledge, one needed to prevent throwing any religious articles in the river, minimize using plastics, manage garbage, keep the banks of the river clean and educate other people about the need to preserve the river.
Positioning river restoration as an ongoing activity, the CM also mentioned that the ongoing efforts towards cleaning will be the beginning of continuous campaigns that are meant for ecological purposes.
In the same light, the Delhi government plans to undertake similar activities on several occasions and at many places to create an effective governance framework of involving the community in ecological initiatives.
Rekha also stressed on many other developments taking place in relation to the projects for the Yamuna rejuvenation project. It appears that about Rs 1,000 crore worth of projects have been planned to promote the project. One such major project entails the construction of 12 decentralized sewage treatment plants in Najafgarh as part of AMRUT scheme.
The local leadership and elected representatives were also actively involved in the cleaning campaign of the river. The first such campaign was organized by the Delhi BJP President, Harsh Malhotra, who initiated cleaning activities near Yamuna Bank Metro Station along with other members Maya Singh Bisht, Kartar Singh Tanwar and Chandan Chaudhary, which resulted in cleaning up of around 500 yards area of the ghat.
Addressing the significance of such projects collectively, harsh pointed out that River Yamuna has been subjected to pollution for decades now, and only a collective effort will be helpful in arriving at an appropriate solution to this problem. He also highlights that the efforts being put are towards getting concrete results by investing in developing sewage facilities, managing polluted wastewaters and making citizens more involved in cleaning the river.
