Chennai will on Friday witness the launching of the second phase of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam - a flagship women's welfare initiative - by the Tamil Nadu government.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the expanded phase at a public meeting organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

The launch comes after the recent announcement by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin that the cash assistance scheme for women heads of families would be extended to cover more beneficiaries.

The State government will organize a programme, ‘Vellum Thamizh Pengal’ (Victorious Tamil Women), showcasing the success of the State in women’s empowerment through various welfare initiatives on the occasion.

The programme will be attended by prominent personalities such as Gandhian and social activist Krishnammal Jagannathan and Paralympics medalist Thulasimathi Murugesan, besides women beneficiaries from all over Tamil Nadu who would share experiences on how government schemes have impacted their lives.

The Chief Minister first made the announcement about the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam on March 27, 2023. The direct monetary benefit of Rs 1,000 is related to income security and stability of households per month given to the eligible women heads of households through this scheme.

More than 1.13 crore beneficiaries were enrolled under the scheme during its first phase; hence, it is one of the largest women-focused income support programs in the country.

The event on December 12 will also witness a few key welfare initiatives such as Vidiyal Payanam-free bus travel for women, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam-home-based healthcare, Nalam Kakkum Stalin health scheme, Thozhi Viduthigal-working women hostels and Nannilam Magalir Nilavudamai Thittam, among others.

State government officials said the extended phase would include more eligible women, in addition to further strengthening the state's social security framework.

It underlined the focus of the government on economic inclusion, dignity, and empowerment of women as an integral part of its governance agenda.
