  • The AIFF has decided not to renew Amelia Valverde’s contract as the head coach of the Indian women’s team
  • This was based on a recommendation to consider Indian coaches for the position
  • The team was also having issues before participating in the tournament over their playing jerseys

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has made the decision not to renew Amelia Valverde as the head coach of the Women's National Team. This new head coach will be of Indian nationality and it has been a decision put forth by AIFF's Technical Committee and the AIFF Chairman, I. M. Vijayan.

The decision to not renew Amelia's contract was made due to the poor performance of the Indian Women's National Team at the recently held AFC Women's Asian Cup that Australian hosts.

A very unfortunate incident took place in 2021, where the Indian Women’s National Team was outfitted with the wrong kits for the tournament; the team's outfits were changed after they were first issued them. Amelia’s time as the head coach of the Women's National Team was less than three months.

The AIFF Technical Committee held a video conference to review the future of both the Men's and Women's National Teams.

People from the Technical Committee participated in the teleconference; among them were former A-League stars Harjinder Singh and others. In addition to the review of the two National Teams, the teleconference was held to evaluate the overall performance of the Indian Women's National Team under Amelia's coaching.

The AIFF issued a formal statement thanking Amelia for his contributions throughout the Tournament and wishing him the best of luck moving forward.

They also expressed there are dates available this year for possible matches during the April FIFA International window and at the SAFF Women's Tournament, so an Indian coach could potentially be appointed during those two windows. It is expected that a decision regarding the coaching appointment will be made soon.

The selection process for the new head coach will occur shortly, as the Indian Women's National Team has an upcoming match against Kenya in the semifinals of the Fifa Women's World Cup Series 2026 on April 11, in Nairobi.
