By appointing Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana as a judge of the Supreme Court, the court got a woman judge again after a gap of more than five years. Until the appointment of Justice Venkita, Justice B.V. Nagarathna was the only woman judge of the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, on May 27 recommended for the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the apex court. The Central Government approved the recommendations on May 31, and the five judges were sworn-in later.
