Electric mobility platform Bijliride is collaborating with the Telangana Police Women Safety Wing and the State Transport Department to introduce ‘Stree Ride’, a project to provide safe, sustainable and flexible employment opportunities for women in the mobility and logistics industry.
It was formally launched by the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand aims to empower women who find themselves deprived of such privileges. The initiative was inaugurated by the Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana, C.V. Anand, and it seeks to give women access to electric vehicles (EVs), skill development courses, and direct employment opportunities in the fields of ride-hailing and delivery services.
Women participants will get access to Bijliride's fleet of electric vehicles, and be seamlessly integrated into the top ride-hailing apps, like Ola, Uber, Rapido and major quick-commerce delivery applications. The integrated approach allows women to start earning from the moment they complete the training and onboarding process.
To promote the initiative, Bijliride has also begun placing EVs in police commission rates for women in specialized driving and safety training courses being conducted in Hyderabad. The company is also making onboarding easy by automating background verification, the documentation process and the registration of the apps through its digital platform.
The common mobile platform will reduce administrative hassles that can slow the way into the work force. After verification, the participants can easily log in to the Uber or food delivery apps and start to take orders. The ability to switch to delivery services or passenger transportation means that women are able to choose their work according to the demand, schedules and their preferences.
First pilot results reported by the company show that the digital platform has helped to cut idle time and administrative time, thus boosting the daily productivity of participants by almost 20 per cent. This improvement has helped to improve the financial autonomy and more stable earning opportunities of the women who join the program.
Key Highlights:
- EV access and training for women
- Direct onboarding to ride-hailing apps
- Promotes women’s employment and EV mobility
In its partnership, Bijliride's Co-Founder Vishal Vikram explained that it is all about the gender disparity in India's mobility industry and finding tangible solutions for women to be part of the workforce.
With the ‘Stree Ride’ initiative, we are working towards providing women vehicles, technology and training to enter the workforce confidently and secure their financial future with ease. This technology, along with the process of onboarding the women, is designed to allow them to earn on their own terms, and make India a more equal society," he added.
The partnership is part of the Telangana government's initiative to improve women's safety and economic engagement, and boost women's financial autonomy through private sector partnerships. A combination of institutional support and electric mobility solutions will help pave the way for a scalable institutional model for the employment of women in urban transport and logistics.
The program will also help to promote electric vehicles in commercial mobility in addition to creating livelihood opportunities. The project aims to foster inclusive economic growth and environmentally responsible transportation by involving women in the ride-hailing and delivery sectors with EVs.
The ‘Stree Ride’ program is being considered as a major initiative for women to be more involved in the gig economy in India and to support cleaner modes of transport. The model, if successfully scaled, could be replicated by other States in the country for gender-inclusive employment initiatives in the transportation and logistics industry and contribute to India's shift towards electric mobility.
