- 20-year-old Simranpreet Kaur Brar took silver in the women's 25m pistol event in the Lima ISSF World Cup
- This was her first-ever senior podium finish in international shooting
- The last round consisted of eight shooters comprising three Indians and three Chinese shooters
Simranpreet Kaur Brar, 20-year-old shooter from Punjab, earned her first senior podium finish as she took a silver medal in the women's 25m pistol event at the Lima World Cup. Competing in a fierce final round that featured three Indian and three Chinese shooters among the eight finalists, Simranpreet held her own against a strong lineup.
Shooting together with experienced players such as double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh, Simranpreet showed great composure and skill. She scored 33, just a point short of the gold to China's Yujie Sun, who had 34. Bronze went to China's Qianxun Yao with 29 points.
Manu, who was impressive in the qualification round with 585 points (securing the second position), was just short of the medal and secured fourth position. Having had a good beginning in the qualifiers, she was not quite good in the final, especially in the first series, and was eliminated after scoring merely a one in the sixth series. Esha took the sixth position overall and was left with 17 points.
Simranpreet, who started her shooting career in 2017, added that she was not bothered about Manu and the Chinese, and was only thinking about her performance and staying strong mentally in the final. "I was not thinking about Manu or the Chinese. I was shooting well in the qualification and I wanted to shoot in the same rhythm in the final also. I shot well and I'm glad that I've won a medal," she said to ‘The Times of India’.
This silver is a great feat for Simranpreet, representing a bright future for the young Indian shooter on the global stage.
