Assam Women SHGs Plant 10 Million Saplings Statewide

A grand plantation campaign was planned by the Assam government, wherein 3.5 million women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) took part in planting saplings numbering 10 million in the state on June 5, 2026.

Conducted coinciding with ‘World Environment Day,’ the campaign aimed to quicken afforestation drives, increase environmental sustainability, and promote community participation in conservation drives. The day is used globally for environmental awareness activities, plantation drives, waste management campaigns, and conservation programmes.

The programme fostered to strengthen the position of women-led NGOs as important players in environmental and developmental projects. In this drive women planted 10 Million saplings in Assam as part of the environmental scheme.

The Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora, has revealed that the state has been planning for a massive tree plantation drive, keeping in view its larger mission towards environmental protection, sustainability.

According to the Minister, the Assam state government’s launch of this state-wide green movement using women SHG's will positively impact other such initiatives throughout the country.

In Assam, self-help groups of women are being utilised for development activities in rural areas.

According to the minister, the government of Assam, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, keeps moving forward with its broad environmental policy that primarily includes conservation efforts and sustainable development programs.

These involve actions such as large-scale tree planting drives, rejuvenation of deforested lands, development of new projects to produce clean energy, and implementation of technological solutions in the field of environment management. The initiative shows how environmental sustainability stays at the center of Assam’s development strategy.

As a preparation towards the huge undertaking of their plantation drive, Atul took up an important review meeting at Guwahati involving the senior officials of the Panchayat & Rural Development Department. This was done in order to look into the current situation, improve the implementation process, and coordinate efforts in rolling out this campaign throughout the entire state.

"During the meeting, we also discussed ongoing initiatives under the P&RD Department, including the Lakhpati Baideo programme," Atul said.

The meeting was attended by: Additional Chief Secretary, Department of P&RD, B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli, Mission Director, ASRLM, Kuntalmoni Sarma Bordoloi, ASRLM SPMs, Anindita Deka & Nabajit Bharali.

Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Hirdesh Mishra, from Department of Environment and Forest nd others proved to be significant and creditable. The high-level coordination meet took place to enhance implementation of the plantation drive in the state.
