According to the Rural Barometer Report 2026, published jointly by WPP Media and Kantar, Gen Z consumers and women in rural India are contributing to the growing demand for diverse products, online shopping and digital services. The findings highlight changing consumer behaviour and increasing adoption of digital platforms across rural markets.
The report is based on a quantitative study of rural mobile phone users across 12 state groupings, conducted in June 2026. Compared with the baseline findings from February 2025, the latest data indicate a shift towards discretionary spending, lifestyle purchases and digital product discovery.
Rural Gen Z consumers aged 18–29 account for 33% of rural mobile users and purchase an average of 19.1 product categories every month, compared with 17 categories in February 2025. Their purchasing activity is higher than that of Millennials, who purchase across 18 categories, and older consumers, who average 16.7 categories. The growth is particularly visible in discretionary and lifestyle-related products.
Key Highlights:
- Rural Gen Z consumers purchase across an average of 19.1 product categories monthly, compared with 17 in February 2025
- Gen Z spends 115 minutes online daily, with 60.4% adopting AI features and 39.4% actively shopping online
- Rural women's online shopping penetration increased by nine percentage points to 29%, highlighting growing digital participation
Even though overall personal care spending was flat across rural India, Gen Z's basket for convenience foods increased from 2.7 to 5.9 categories, health and wellness category increased from 3.6 to 5.4 and personal grooming category increased from 2.6 to 3.5.
This consumption explosion has digital engagement and AI at its core. Rural Gen Z is on average 115 minutes online a day, whereas the rural average is 93 minutes, and 39.4% are active online shopping.
Moreover, the percentage of AI feature adoption among Gen Z was 60.4% compared to 52.6% of all rural adults, with image-based shopping, visual filters, and voice-to-text navigations among the key reasons. The power of influencer marketing is also seductive: 40.9% of rural Gen Z follow online creators, 77.3% trust their recommendations and 14.7% make instant purchases.
At the same time, rural women are closing the digital commerce divide. As for the categories women purchase monthly, they are now leading men in 18.4 categories, whereas the online shopping penetration among rural women rose by nine percentage points to 29%. Localised communication continues to play a key role in brand entry, with 83% of rural consumers saying that they feel local language content is important.
When commenting on the findings, WPP Media India EVP Ajay Mehta and Kantar Director Puneet Avasthi said that marketers should no longer assume that rural India is a monolithic market and that they need to shape their media approaches around the likes of creator networks, AI discovery channels and the regional language they used.
