- First woman to hold the office of Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand
- Appointment by the Governor of Uttarakhand on Saturday
In a significant turn of events, Radha Raturi (Retd IAS: 1988), Uttarakhand's new first woman Chief Secretary, has been appointed as the State's Chief Information Commissioner. The Governor of Uttarakhand made the appointment formally on Saturday. She will hold the constitutional post for three years or until the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
Radha officially retired as Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand on 31st March, handing over the charge to her successor Anand Vardhan (IAS: 1992: UK). Her new appointment as Chief Information Commissioner of the State is yet another outstanding chapter in a long and glorious career.
Before taking up the post of Chief Secretary on 31 January, 2024, Radha was the Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister. She replaced Sukhbir Singh Sandhu (IAS: 1988: UD) and took the post provisionally for a period of two months. Due to her satisfactory performance, two six-month terms in succession were awarded to her, ending on her retirement in March 2025.
Her appointment as Chief Information Commissioner follows a long wait, as she had submitted her application long in advance. The appointment was officially announced by way of a recent government order. In a parallel appointment, Uttarakhand Information Commission has also appointed Dalip Kunwar—a just retired IPS officer and ex-SSP of Dehradun—as an Information Commissioner. He is joined by Yogesh Bhatt on the Commission, now headed by Radha Raturi as the Chief Information Commissioner.
Hailing originally from Jabalpur, Raturi belongs to a background in journalism. Prior to becoming a part of the civil services, she served at The Indian Express in Mumbai and India Today. She joined the Indian Information Service in 1985-86, cleared the IPS in 1987, and later became a part of the IAS in 1988. In her long career life, she has served in every nook and corner of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, leaving a legacy of visionary leadership and public service excellence behind.
