Narendra Modi indicated his administration’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment in India and said the Women’s Reservation Act will help to improve female participation in governance.
His comments were made in response to a recent article published in a newspaper by Union Minister Annapurna Devi that discussed improving women’s representation through greater legislative leadership and engagement, and stressed the importance of representation in achieving inclusive governance.
In a post on X, Modi said that representation should lead to meaningful influence and pointed out that the framework contained in the Women’s Reservation Act provides for women being able to take part in the larger goal of achieving women-led governance through development.
The Women’s Reservation Act, which is officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam and was passed by Parliament in 2023. The Act provides for 33 per cent of Lok Sabha and state legislatures to have at least one third of all members of Parliament be female.
The Act was also passed as a constitutional amendment and will become effective upon the conclusion of future delimitation exercises.
The Prime Minister also announced that the Parliament’s budget session would be extended from April 16 to 18 to allow for further discussions regarding amendments to the Act and its implementation scheduled for 2029.
Government officials indicated that it would require an additional constitutional amendment for the implementation of the Act to be completed prior to any future delimitation cycles.
