Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his "Mann Ki Baat" radio talk on December 28, mentioned entrepreneurs at the grassroots level from Manipur and how knowledge systems blended with modern methods could facilitate economic and social development.
He added that the programme offers a platform for identifying the people who are involved in the preservation of traditional arts while earning their livelihood from their activities.
To demonstrate, He cited the example of Margaret Ramtharsiem from the Churachandpur district of Manipur, who started as a handicraft producer and gradually developed the activity to include other products made of wood and bamboo.
She has more than 50 local artists in her handicraft production unit, and she has managed to establish a market in a number of other states, including Delhi.
The Prime Minister also referred to the example of Chokhone Krichena from Senapati district. While having an agrarian background, Krichena has diversified into floriculture and developed a livelihood approach where local products have been integrated with larger markets.
