India Women won the fourth T20 match against Sri Lanka by a margin of 30 runs in Thiruvananthapuram on December 28, defending a target of 222 runs to seal a 4-0 series win in the five-match series.
Batting first, India put up a great show in their inning and scored a total of 221/2 in 20 overs, which is their highest team total in women’s T20 internationals.
The opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave a great start to the inning by reaching a total of 61 without any loss of wickets in the first six over power play, along with a 162-run opening partnership.
Shafali contributed 79 runs in just 46 deliveries, while Smriti contributed 80 runs in 48 deliveries. The tail end also contributed some quick runs; Richa remained unbeaten with 40 runs in 16 deliveries, while Harmanpreet Kaur remained not out with 16 runs.
Smriti also reached the milestone of scoring 10,000 runs in women’s international cricket while she was at the crease. She is the second Indian player to achieve this milestone.
In response, Sri Lanka started their innings on the positive side. Their captain, Chamari Athapaththu, started well by scoring 52 off 37 deliveries, accompanied by Hasini Perera, who added 33 off 20 balls. Both the opening batswomen added 59 Partnership runs before Perera was out bowled by Arundhati Reddy.
Chamari later contributed to a 57-run partnership with Imesha Dulani to get Sri Lanka back into the match.
Although the run-out of Chamari by spinner Vaishnavi Sharma in the 12.5th over momentarily disrupted the flow, Dulani was run out for 29, with Harshitha Samarawickrama also getting out to Vaishnavi.
Sri Lanka reached 150 in 16.5 overs but found it difficult to keep the required run rate. Nilakshika Silva was unbeaten on 23 off 11 balls late in the innings, but the visitors reached 191/6.
For the Indian bowlers, Vaishnavi Sharma took 2/24, and Arundhati took two wickets. Shree Charani took one wicket. This win ensures that India have won the series despite one match remaining.
