PM Modi Hails Indian Women's Cricket Team After Asian Games Gold

Indian women cricketers made another significant contribution to their international record in securing gold at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan under Harmanpreet Kaur's leadership. In the women's T-20 cricket final, India beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs on September 22 to win its first gold at the ongoing Games. India bowled out for 216 for 3 in 20 overs to make the highest total in the women's cricket competition in the Asian Games. Smriti Mandhana scored 79 runs from 45 deliveries and Shafali Verma added 48 runs as they led the way with the Indian women. Richa Ghosh had a brilliant conclusion with 49 off 22 balls.

Sri Lanka struggled during the chase and were bowled out for 69 in 15.4 overs. Deepti Sharma got the ball out to collect three wickets, while Shafali Verma and Shree Charani also had two each. The victory secured India its second successive gold medal in women's cricket at the Asian Games, after the team clinched the top spot in the Hangzhou Asian Games just a year ago when India won the gold, having finished runners-up behind Sri Lanka in the final.

The win was also a major career achievement for Smriti Mandhana. The Indian vice-captain then reached the milestone of 11,000 international runs on her maiden innings, further solidifying her great career in the sport. Her 79-run partnership with Shafali Verma's incendiary opening and Richa Ghosh's late spurt helped India to take control of the final.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his happiness over the success in a post on X's Prime Minister's Twitter handle. “Indian cricket scored a glorious win,” he added. He hailed the women's cricket team for its gold medal victory, calling its performance at the Games, a fantastic performance which was confidence, skill and fantastic teamwork. He also added that India had won its first gold of the edition and said that the team had made India proud.
